Clinical Nursing Practice Students of Universitas Airlangga Provide Nutrition Management Education for Post-Operative Patients at Irna 3 of RSUA

NERS NEWS — Clinical Nursing Practice (PKK) students from Group C1 of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga conducted a health education session on nutrition management for post-operative patients at the Inpatient Installation (Irna) 3 of Rumah Sakit Universitas Airlangga on Wednesday, May 13, 2026. This activity was intended for patients and their families as an effort to improve understanding regarding the importance of adequate nutritional intake during the post-surgical recovery period to support healing and prevent complications.

The educational session was held in the family waiting area of Irna 3 RSUA using lecture and interactive question-and-answer methods. The material presented included the goals of post-operative nutrition management, nutrients needed by the body during recovery, recommended and restricted foods, warning signs of inadequate nutritional intake, and the important role of families in supporting patients’ nutritional needs. In addition to direct presentations, the students also distributed educational leaflets as informational media so participants could review the material and apply it in their daily lives. Participants appeared enthusiastic throughout the session, actively asking questions and engaging in discussions regarding appropriate dietary patterns during post-operative recovery.

This activity involved Group C1 Clinical Nursing Practice students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga Class of 2023, namely M. Awwal Arrayan Radeza, Silvia Yuni Nur Azizah, Fani Suta Angela, Fernanda Bella Stevany Felicia, and Laili Nurfaiza Niswa Alfira. The activity was conducted under the supervision of Rifky Octavia Pradipta as the academic supervisor and Yevi Dwi L as the clinical supervisor. The educational session lasted for 30 minutes and targeted patients and families in the Inpatient Installation 3 of Rumah Sakit Universitas Airlangga.

This educational activity was motivated by the importance of adequate nutrition for post-operative patients, which plays a significant role in accelerating wound healing, improving the immune system, maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance, and reducing the risk of post-surgical complications. Limited knowledge among patients and families regarding appropriate nutritional patterns after surgery can lead to delayed recovery and increase the risk of surgical wound infections. Therefore, health education regarding nutrition management serves as one of the promotive and preventive efforts to improve knowledge, attitudes, and awareness among patients and families in supporting optimal recovery. This activity also supported the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, through improving public health literacy.

“Through this activity, we hope that patients and families can understand the importance of proper nutritional intake after surgery so that the patient’s recovery process can proceed more optimally and the risk of complications can be minimized,” stated a member of PKK Group C1. Through this educational activity, nursing students not only served as caregivers but also as health educators contributing to the improvement of healthcare quality through educational services for the community. It is hoped that similar activities can continue sustainably to increase public awareness regarding the importance of nutrition management in supporting post-operative patient recovery.
