NERS NEWS — Students of the Nursing Profession Education Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (Unair), Community and Family Nursing Rotation, Wave 2, conducted a Productive Age Health Working Group activity at the RW 01 Community Hall, Gebang Lor, Surabaya, on Saturday, September 12, 2026, from 9:00–10:00 a.m. WIB. This activity targeted women of productive age through education on hypertension prevention and control as well as anti-hypertension exercises to encourage the implementation of a healthy lifestyle through the CERDIK principle.
The activity took place in a warm, interactive, and enthusiastic atmosphere. The students provided education about hypertension, risk factors, signs and symptoms, complications, as well as prevention measures through the CERDIK principle, namely Cek kesehatan secara berkala (regular health checks), Exercise or physical activity, Reduksi stres (stress reduction), Diet seimbang (balanced diet), Istirahat cukup (adequate rest), and Konsumsi obat sesuai anjuran (taking medication as recommended).
The education became more engaging when participants were given the opportunity to discuss and share their experiences. One of the mothers shared that she had hypertension and a family history of hypertension, making the experience an important reminder of the importance of recognizing risk factors early. Another participant also shared that she sometimes forgot to take her hypertension medication and had not been taking it regularly every day. In response, the students reinforced the importance of following medication use instructions according to healthcare professionals’ recommendations and not stopping treatment independently.
In addition to the education, the students and all participants also carried out anti-hypertension exercises. All the mothers who attended actively followed the movements from beginning to end. The atmosphere became even livelier as the participants moved together with the students. This activity served as a direct application of the importance of physical activity while also creating closer and more enjoyable interaction between the students and the community.
This activity aimed to increase the knowledge and awareness of women of productive age regarding the prevention and control of hypertension through the implementation of healthy behaviors. Through the CERDIK principle, the community was encouraged to maintain a healthy diet, stay physically active, manage stress, get adequate rest, have their blood pressure checked regularly, and adhere to treatment. These efforts are important because uncontrolled hypertension can increase the risk of complications such as stroke, heart failure, kidney failure, and visual impairment.
This Productive Age Health Working Group activity was in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-Being, particularly in efforts to increase public awareness of the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases. This activity also supported SDG 4: Quality Education through the provision of health education to the community.
The entire series of activities ran smoothly, orderly, interactively, and with a strong sense of togetherness. The enthusiasm of the mothers in discussions and in participating in the exercises showed that health education can become more meaningful when the community is directly involved. Through the CERDIK spirit and exercising together, Unair Nursing Profession students hoped that the RW 01 Gebang Lor community would become increasingly aware of the importance of maintaining health and preventing hypertension from productive age. This activity also served as a form of nursing education’s contribution to improving community health and supporting the achievement of the SDGs.
