NERS NEWS — Nursing Professional Program Group D2.3 of the Pediatric Nursing rotation conducted a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) activity titled “Pneumonia in Children: Recognizing the Symptoms and Prevention” at the IRNA 4 Pediatric Ward, Universitas Airlangga Hospital, on Friday, July 17, 2026. The activity was attended by parents and family members of hospitalized pediatric patients as an effort to improve their understanding of pneumonia, one of the leading causes of illness in children that requires early recognition and prompt management.
The educational session began with an opening and introduction by the education team, followed by an interactive presentation using easy-to-understand educational materials. The topics covered included the definition of pneumonia, its causes, risk factors, warning signs and symptoms, and preventive measures that can be applied in daily life. Participants also received information on the importance of proper hand hygiene, practicing cough etiquette, ensuring adequate nutrition for children, completing routine immunizations according to schedule, and avoiding exposure to cigarette smoke to reduce the risk of pneumonia.
Throughout the session, participants showed great enthusiasm. Parents and family members actively listened to the presentation and asked various questions regarding how to recognize the symptoms of pneumonia, the initial management of children experiencing cough and shortness of breath, and when a child should be taken to a healthcare facility. All questions were answered clearly and communicatively by the education team, enabling participants to gain a better understanding of the importance of early detection and pneumonia prevention.
Through this PKRS activity, it is hoped that parents and family members will be better equipped to recognize the warning signs of pneumonia in children and apply preventive measures at home. The education provided is also expected to raise public awareness of the importance of seeking immediate medical attention if a child experiences symptoms such as rapid breathing, difficulty breathing, persistent high fever, or a decline in overall condition.
The educational activity was conducted smoothly and orderly, receiving positive responses from all participants. This PKRS program represents one of the commitments of the Nursing Professional Program Pediatric Nursing Group to support the improvement of healthcare quality through health education for patients and their families at Universitas Airlangga Hospital.
