NERS NEWS – Group 2 of the Community Nursing Rotation, Wave 2, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a health education activity entitled “Beware of Stroke: Prevent, Recognize, and Treat It Immediately” for the community at RW 1 Community Hall, Klampis Ngasem, on September 21, 2026. The activity was part of an effort to increase public knowledge about stroke risk factors, signs and symptoms that need to be recognized early, and the importance of obtaining medical assistance as soon as possible when stroke symptoms occur.
Stroke is one of the medical emergencies that requires prompt treatment. Through this educational activity, the students provided information on the definition of stroke, modifiable risk factors, signs and symptoms of stroke, preventive measures, and the appropriate actions to take when someone shows signs of a stroke.
The materials were delivered using an interactive and communicative approach so that participants not only received information but were also encouraged to recognize signs of stroke that may be encountered in everyday life. Participants were also given an understanding of the importance of immediately taking a stroke patient to a healthcare facility and not delaying assistance when stroke symptoms begin to appear.
One of the main messages emphasized during the activity was the importance of recognizing stroke signs quickly. “Through this educational activity, we hope that the community will not only understand what a stroke is, but also be able to recognize its early signs and take immediate action when they encounter them,” said one of the student presenters during the educational session.
The activity was held at the RW 1 Community Hall, Klampis Ngasem, and attended by local residents. The activity was supervised by Yunita Sari, Amd. Kep., under the academic guidance of Setho Hadisuyatmana, S.Kep., Ns., M.NS (Comm Hlth & PC)., Ph.D., and clinical supervision by Mus’adah, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kes.
In addition to providing education, this activity also served as an opportunity for students to contribute to improving community health literacy, particularly regarding non-communicable diseases and medical emergencies. The community is expected to be able to recognize stroke risk factors and understand that receiving timely assistance is an important part of stroke management.
This activity was integrated with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely:
- SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being): Supporting improvements in community health through education on stroke prevention, recognition of stroke signs, and the importance of immediate treatment.
- SDG 4 (Quality Education): Implemented through the delivery of easy-to-understand health education to improve public knowledge and health literacy.
- SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals): Encouraging collaboration among students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, healthcare professionals, supervisors, and the community in efforts to improve community health.
Through the “Beware of Stroke: Prevent, Recognize, and Treat It Immediately” activity, the community is expected to become more aware of stroke risk factors and early signs and to avoid delaying the search for medical assistance when symptoms occur. This educational activity is expected to serve as a simple step toward building a community that is more health-conscious, responsive, and attentive, particularly in dealing with stroke emergencies.
