NERS NEWS – The second wave of community activities with the theme “CERDIK: Prevent and Control Hypertension with Education and Exercise” was carried out in the form of health education and hypertension exercise practices for the elderly. The activity began with an opening by the moderator who greeted the participants, introduced the implementation team, and explained the purpose of the activity to the participants. Next, a health education session was conducted using presentation media, leaflets, and interactive discussions. The material presented included the definition of hypertension, blood pressure classification, risk factors for hypertension such as age, high-salt diet, lack of physical activity, smoking, obesity, and stress, as well as signs and symptoms that may appear in people with hypertension.
In addition, various complications that can occur if hypertension is not controlled, such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney disorders, were also explained. After the presentation of the material, participants were given the opportunity to ask questions and discuss so that two-way communication between the presenter and participants was created. The activity then continued with a demonstration and practice of hypertension exercises guided by an exercise video and accompanied by students as facilitators. The participants enthusiastically followed the exercise movements together.
This activity was carried out by students of the Nursing Professional Education Study Program, Faculty of Nursing, Airlangga University, who were undergoing a Community Nursing Internship as part of their community learning practice. The main target of the activity was the elderly in the RW 06 area. The activity was held on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, starting at 8:00 AM until completion, at the RW 06 Community Hall in Klampis Ngasem Village. During the activity, participants were seen to be active and participated well, both during the educational session and when participating in the hypertension exercise practice together.
This activity aims to increase the knowledge, awareness, and ability of the elderly to prevent and control hypertension through the application of healthy living behaviors and physical activities in the form of hypertension exercises. The background for this activity is based on the high risk of hypertension in the elderly due to the aging process, which causes a decrease in blood vessel elasticity, as well as unhealthy lifestyle factors. Through health education using the CERDIK (Prevent and Control Hypertension with Education and Exercise) approach, it is hoped that the elderly will understand how to maintain their health and control their blood pressure independently. Additionally, this activity aligns with efforts to achieve the SDGs, particularly Goal 3, Good Health and Well-Being, which emphasizes the importance of ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all ages through promotive and preventive efforts in the community.
With the implementation of this activity, it is hoped that the community, especially the elderly in RW 06, Klampis Ngasem Village, will be more aware and motivated to maintain their health so that the risk of hypertension and its complications can be minimized.
