Choking First Aid Education by Nursing Profession Students of Unair in the Operating Room Waiting Area of Universitas Airlangga Hospital

NERS NEWS — Nursing Profession Education Program students of Batch 48, Group 4, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, in collaboration with the Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) Team, held a health education activity with the theme “Management and Treatment of Choking.” The activity was held on Friday, August 28, 2026, from 09:00 to 10:00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB), in the waiting area of the Operating Room (OR) at Universitas Airlangga Hospital, Surabaya. The health education session was delivered by Ilma Amalia, S.Kep. as the presenter, with Indri Dyah Puji Lestari, S.Kep., Ns. as the Clinical Supervisor.

This education targeted 15 family members of patients who were waiting for surgical procedures. Choking emergencies were the main focus of the material because airway obstruction can cause tissue hypoxia and permanent brain cell damage within only 4 to 6 minutes. Therefore, this health education aimed to equip the general public with basic knowledge and practical skills so that they can provide first aid quickly and appropriately at home before receiving further medical treatment.

The activity began with an opening, distribution of leaflets, and presentation of material on recognizing the signs of partial and complete choking. The student team directly demonstrated emergency management techniques, starting with a combination of 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver) for adults and children, as well as safe back blows and chest thrusts for infants under one year of age. In addition, the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) algorithm was explained if the victim becomes unconscious, along with education about the dangers of performing a blind finger sweep. During the 30-minute session, participants listened enthusiastically through posters and leaflets, actively practiced the first aid steps, and responded actively during the discussion and final evaluation session.
