NERS NEWS — Surabaya, September 12, 2026 — Nursing Profession Education Program students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, Batch B27, Community and Family Nursing Rotation, Wave 2, conducted an educational and simulation activity entitled “Choose Your Food, Sort Your Waste!” on Saturday (September 12, 2026). The activity was conducted at MI Ribath Darut Tauhid, Bulak, Surabaya, targeting Grade 3 students.
The activity, which began at 9:00 a.m. WIB, addressed two main topics, namely healthy food consumption and the sorting of organic and inorganic waste. This education was part of learning activities in the field of Community and Family Nursing, which aimed to increase children’s knowledge and awareness regarding the importance of choosing healthy foods while maintaining environmental cleanliness through proper waste management.
The activity began with the delivery of material on healthy foods using simple language that was easy for students to understand. The students were invited to recognize various types of food and understand the importance of consuming a balanced diet. In addition to receiving the material, students were also given the opportunity to interact through questions and examples of foods they commonly consume in their daily lives.
Not only focusing on individual health, the activity continued with education on sorting organic and inorganic waste. Students were introduced to the differences between the two types of waste, along with examples that can be found in their surroundings. The material was delivered interactively so that students not only knew the types of waste but also understood the importance of disposing of and sorting waste according to its category.
To strengthen their understanding, Unair Young Nurses invited the students to participate in a waste-sorting simulation. In this activity, students directly practiced determining the appropriate place for various types of waste. The activity was interactive, with students showing enthusiasm through their active participation in answering questions and following the simulation.
Through the “Choose Your Food, Sort Your Waste!” activity, Unair Young Nurses hoped that students would begin to adopt healthier food choices and become accustomed to sorting organic and inorganic waste in their daily lives. Education from school age is expected to serve as an initial step in developing healthy living behaviors as well as concern for environmental cleanliness.
This activity was one form of contribution by Nursing Profession Education Program students of Faculty of Nursing Unair in providing health education to the community, particularly school-age children, through an educational, interactive, and enjoyable approach.
