Disaster Preparedness Education Highlights Community Service Program on Oshima Island

NERS NEWS — (Sunday, July 26, 2026) — Students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, namely Talitha Maulia Nada (A24), Muhammad Rayhan Ricardi Sudrajat (A23), and Sandrina Humairah (A23), together with students from the Japanese Red Cross Kyushu International College of Nursing (JRCKICN), conducted a community service activity at the Oshima Island Community Center, Japan, on Sunday, July 26, 2026. The activity aimed to increase community knowledge of disaster preparedness through interactive education and simple practices that can be applied during emergencies.

The activity began with a presentation on the importance of disaster preparedness for community members of various age groups, ranging from children to older adults. The education was delivered interactively through discussions and demonstrations of the steps that should be taken before, during, and after a disaster. In addition, participants were provided with an explanation of how to prepare an emergency bag and the essential items that should be included, such as masks, tissues, wet wipes, routine medications, identification documents, family contacts, and basic first-aid supplies.

As part of the activity, community members also participated in a workshop on making emergency supplies from newspapers, such as sandals, cups, and food containers, which can be used when access to basic necessities is limited due to a disaster. The activity received enthusiastic responses from participants as it provided practical skills that could easily be applied in everyday life.

Through collaboration with JRCKICN students, the activity not only served as an educational platform for the Oshima Island community but also provided valuable experience for the students in applying the concept of community-based disaster preparedness in an international setting. Direct interaction with the community further strengthened their communication skills, cross-cultural collaboration, and understanding of the important role of nurses in improving community preparedness for disasters.

The activity supported the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, through increasing community knowledge of disaster preparedness; SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, through strengthening community resilience in facing disasters; and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through international collaboration among the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, the Japanese Red Cross Kyushu International College of Nursing, and the Oshima Island community.
