NERS NEWS – Patients in the Kenari Ward at Rumah Sakit Jiwa Menur showed enthusiasm in participating in a Group Activity Therapy (GAT) session focused on implementing Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) in toileting for defecation (BAB) and urination (BAK) on Friday, February 20, 2026. This activity was conducted as part of the clinical practice for Psychiatric Nursing rotation students to enhance patients’ independence and personal hygiene.
The GAT session aimed to help patients understand the importance of maintaining hygiene during bowel movements and urination, as well as to train them in proper toileting procedures. During the core session, patients received education on correct toilet use, proper self-cleaning after defecation and urination, washing hands with soap, and maintaining bathroom cleanliness.
The activity was carried out in stages, beginning with an orientation phase to build a comfortable atmosphere, followed by the delivery of educational material and demonstrations of proper toileting steps, and concluding with an evaluation phase to assess patients’ understanding. The students acted as facilitators, using simple communication and a supportive approach to ensure the material was easily understood and applied.
Throughout the session, patients actively followed instructions and responded to questions. Some were able to repeat the correct toileting steps. One patient shared that the activity reminded them to wash their hands more consistently after using the toilet. “Sometimes I forget, but now I remember better and want to try,” the patient said.
Through this activity, it is hoped that patients will be able to apply Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) in their daily routines, particularly in toileting for defecation and urination, so that personal and environmental hygiene can be maintained. This activity also serves as part of the students’ practical learning process in providing basic health education to patients in the inpatient ward.
