Faculty of Nursing Nursing Professional Program at Universitas Airlangga: Recognize Preeclampsia Early in Pregnant Women

NERS NEWS — The Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Airlangga through Nursing Professional Program students conducted a health education activity on the early detection and prevention of anemia during pregnancy on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at the Obgyn Clinic of Universitas Airlangga Hospital, Surabaya. This activity was intended for patients and families to improve knowledge and awareness regarding the importance of early detection of preeclampsia in pregnant women through educational and discussion methods as an effort to prevent pregnancy complications.

The educational activity was conducted through lectures and question-and-answer sessions with materials covering the definition of preeclampsia during pregnancy, causes, signs and symptoms, impacts on both mother and fetus, as well as prevention methods. The education also emphasized risk factors for preeclampsia in pregnant women and preventive measures that can be carried out during pregnancy. Leaflets, posters, and PowerPoint presentations were used to help participants understand the information more effectively.

This activity was carried out by Nursing Professional students from the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Airlangga who are members of Group D4.1 under the supervision of academic lecturers and clinical supervisors. The educational session took place at 09.00 WIB at the Obgyn Clinic of Universitas Airlangga Hospital and was attended by pregnant women and their families who were undergoing antenatal examinations.

This activity aimed to improve the knowledge and awareness of pregnant women regarding preeclampsia so that they would be able to perform early detection and prevention independently. Hypertension during pregnancy remains a health issue that can lead to various complications such as premature birth, low birth weight, and the risk of maternal and infant mortality. Therefore, this activity serves as a form of contribution in supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being.

A student representative stated that this educational activity is expected to increase public awareness, especially among pregnant women, to pay greater attention to nutritional intake and routinely undergo pregnancy examinations in order to prevent hypertension during pregnancy from an early stage.

Through this educational activity, the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Airlangga through the Nursing Professional Program demonstrates its commitment to improving public health quality, particularly for pregnant women. It is hoped that the education provided will have a tangible impact on the prevention of preeclampsia and contribute to the sustainable improvement of maternal and child health.
