Faculty of Nursing Students of Universitas Airlangga Conduct Group Activity Therapy at Liponsos Keputih, Surabaya

NERS NEWS – Surabaya, 2026 – Students of the Bachelor of Nursing Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga conducted a Group Activity Therapy (TAK) program as part of their psychiatric nursing clinical practice at UPTD Liponsos Keputih. This activity represents a practical implementation of experiential learning aimed at improving the quality of nursing care for individuals with mental disorders (ODGJ).

The TAK activity adopted an innovative approach through a combination of motor, cognitive, and social stimulation using the Opposite Game method and light exercise. This intervention was designed to improve participants’ concentration skills, impulse control, and overall psychological well-being.

The activity involved patients with stable mental health conditions who were able to participate cooperatively in group activities. The program began with an opening session, followed by educational sessions, demonstrations, and direct practice of the Opposite Game, which aimed to train participants’ focus and adaptive responses to instructions. The activity then continued with light hand exercises as a form of physical stimulation to support cognitive function improvement and psychological relaxation.

Throughout the activity, the students served as facilitators, educators, and motivators who actively accompanied the participants. The therapeutic approach emphasized effective communication, positive reinforcement, and the creation of a conducive and enjoyable atmosphere for the participants.

The results of the activity demonstrated increased active participation among participants, improved ability to follow instructions, and enhanced social interaction between patients. In addition, participants appeared more relaxed and showed more positive mood changes after completing the therapy sessions.

Through this activity, the students not only directly applied psychiatric nursing theories but also developed professional competencies in providing holistic and patient-centered nursing care.

The Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga remains committed to encouraging innovation in nursing education and practice, including the development of adaptive and applicable non-pharmacological interventions to improve the quality of life of the community, especially vulnerable groups such as individuals with mental disorders.
