Faculty of Nursing Unair Delegation Deepens Knowledge of Humanitarian Crisis and Disaster Management in Japan

NERS NEWS — Munakata, July 15, 2026 — The delegation from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (Unair), participated in a learning session on Humanitarian Crisis and Disaster Management at the Japanese Red Cross Kyushu International College of Nursing (JRCKICN), Munakata, Japan, on Wednesday, July 15. The activity was part of the academic series of the Student Outbound program, aiming to broaden students’ understanding of responses to humanitarian crises and disasters from an international perspective.

The activity began with a lecture discussing the concepts of Humanitarian Crisis and Disaster Management. Through the learning session, students gained an understanding of various humanitarian crisis situations, disaster management strategies, and the role of healthcare professionals in providing appropriate responses during emergencies and disasters. The materials also provided a foundation for students to understand the importance of preparedness in facing various crisis situations.

Following the lecture, the activity continued with a discussion entitled “Disaster and Preparedness in Different Countries.” During the discussion, the Faculty of Nursing Unair delegation compared disaster preparedness and management systems in Japan and Indonesia. The discussion covered early warning systems, community preparedness, disaster response, and the approaches adopted by both countries in addressing various potential disasters. The exchange of perspectives also provided students with an opportunity to reflect on the conditions and challenges of disaster preparedness in Indonesia.

The lecture and discussion aimed to broaden students’ knowledge of humanitarian crises and disaster management while developing critical thinking skills in understanding disaster preparedness across different countries. The learning activities supported the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being through strengthening healthcare professionals’ competencies in emergency response, SDG 4: Quality Education through international learning and knowledge exchange, and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities through understanding community resilience in facing disaster risks.

Through this activity, the Faculty of Nursing Unair delegation is expected to integrate global perspectives with the context of disasters in Indonesia. The experience serves as an important part of shaping nursing students who possess international perspectives, critical thinking skills, and preparedness to contribute to healthcare services during emergencies and disasters.
