Faculty of Nursing, Unair Educates Patients to Recognize CAPD as a Solution for Independent Dialysis in the Hemodialysis Room of Universitas Airlangga Hospital

NERS NEWS — Nursing Profession Program Students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a health education session entitled “Recognize CAPD: A Practical Solution for Independent Dialysis at Home” on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 08:30 a.m. WIB in the Hemodialysis Room of Universitas Airlangga Hospital. The activity was intended for patients and family members accompanying patients to improve their understanding of Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD) as one of the alternative renal replacement therapies, which was delivered through posters and leaflets.

During the activity, the presenting team explained that CAPD is an independent dialysis method without a machine that utilizes the lining of the abdominal cavity, or peritoneum, as a natural filter to clean the blood of metabolic waste products and excess body fluid. Unlike hemodialysis, which requires a machine and vascular access, CAPD is performed through three main stages, namely drain (removing the old fluid), fill (introducing new fluid), and dwell (the time the fluid remains in the peritoneal cavity), which are generally performed four to six times a day according to the doctor’s prescription. This method is considered suitable for patients who want independent therapy, have difficult vascular access, or live far from a hemodialysis unit.

This health education activity was conducted by seven Nursing Profession students, namely Maharani Gusti Putri Sinatria and Najma Faradisa Sufyan as presenters, Cici Yulia as the moderator, Irna Savira and Puji Tri Purnaningsih as facilitators, Kris Nawandari Putri Maharani as the observer, and Luisa Angelica Bassory who was responsible for documenting the activity. The health education was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Ika Yuni Widyawati, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., Ns., Sp.Kep.MB., as the academic advisor, and Wahyu Putri S, S.Kep., Ns., as the clinical supervisor in the Hemodialysis Room of Universitas Airlangga Hospital.

This health education activity was motivated by the need for patients with chronic kidney disease to understand the procedures, benefits, and risks of CAPD, including potential complications such as peritonitis and infection at the catheter exit site, so that they can be recognized and reported early. Through this education, patients and families are expected to be able to perform CAPD care independently and appropriately at home, thereby improving quality of life while reducing the risk of complications caused by procedural errors.

This health education activity supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being – improving health literacy among patients with chronic kidney disease and supporting access to safe and independent dialysis therapy.
  • SDG 4: Quality Education – providing quality health education for patients and families as part of the clinical learning of Nursing Profession students.

This CAPD education is expected to equip patients and families with adequate knowledge to undergo independent dialysis therapy safely at home. This activity also represents the contribution of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, to supporting improvements in public health and the achievement of the SDGs in the health sector.
