Faculty of Nursing Universitas Airlangga Students Equip SDIT Al Uswah Female Students to Face Puberty

NERS NEWS — Surabaya, May 25, 2026 — Students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga conducted a Project-Based Learning (PjBL) activity entitled “SHINE PUBERTY: Interactive Puberty Education for Elementary School Students to Face Body Changes, Adopt Healthy Lifestyles, and Debunk Puberty Myths” at SDIT Al Uswah Surabaya. This activity aimed to improve elementary school girls’ understanding of puberty, reproductive health, and the implementation of healthy lifestyle practices through interactive and enjoyable educational methods.

The activity was an implementation of learning that integrated the courses of Maternity Nursing, Pediatric Nursing, and Psychosocial and Cultural Nursing. A total of 48 female students from classes VI A, VI B, and VI C participated in a series of educational and interactive activities designed to help them understand the physical and psychological changes that occur during puberty.

The event began with an opening session and welcoming remarks from the organizing committee chairperson, supervising lecturers, and school representatives. Participants then completed a pre-test to assess their initial knowledge of puberty. The educational materials covered the definition of puberty, physical and emotional changes in adolescent girls, the importance of maintaining personal hygiene, adopting healthy lifestyle habits, and understanding myths and facts commonly found in society.

To make the materials easier to understand, the students introduced various interactive learning methods, including animated videos, educational quizzes, and question-and-answer sessions. Through this approach, participants not only gained new information but also had the opportunity to discuss and ask questions regarding the changes they experience during puberty.

The activity was supervised by Dr. Aria Aulia Nastiti, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., Course Coordinator for Maternity Nursing and Psychosocial and Cultural Nursing, and Dr. Iqlima Dwi Kurnia, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., Course Coordinator for Pediatric Nursing. According to the organizing team, reproductive health education from elementary school age is an important step in preparing children to face adolescence in a healthy and positive manner.

The post-test evaluation results showed an improvement in participants’ knowledge regarding puberty, reproductive health, and healthy lifestyle practices. The participants’ enthusiasm was also evident through their active involvement during discussions and various educational activities prepared by the organizers.

The SHINE PUBERTY program also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) through improving reproductive health literacy and SDG 4 (Quality Education) through the provision of quality health education for school-age children. Through this program, Faculty of Nursing Universitas Airlangga students demonstrated their commitment to applying nursing knowledge while contributing to the improvement of public health from an early age.
