NERS NEWS — Group B7 students of the Nursing Clinical Practice (PKK) program from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) activity with the theme “STOP TB: Recognize the Symptoms, Prevent the Transmission, Complete the Treatment” in the Pharmacy Waiting Area on the 2nd Floor of the Universitas Airlangga Infectious Disease Hospital (RSKI). This activity was intended for patients and patients’ family members who were waiting for pharmacy services. The education was provided as an effort to increase public knowledge regarding tuberculosis (TB), including its definition, modes of transmission, symptoms, examinations, treatment, and preventive measures.
The event began with introductions and an explanation of the objectives of the activity, followed by the presentation of materials regarding TB. Participants received information about the signs and symptoms of TB that need to be recognized, the importance of seeking medical examinations when symptoms appear, and the importance of adhering to treatment until completion to prevent drug resistance. In addition to the educational presentation, the group also demonstrated the six steps of proper handwashing and correct cough etiquette as preventive measures against the spread of infectious diseases. The activity was conducted interactively through discussion and question-and-answer sessions, allowing participants to share their experiences and ask questions related to TB.
To strengthen participants’ understanding, the group distributed educational leaflets containing a summary of the materials and displayed educational posters throughout the activity. Participants who actively asked questions also received simple gifts as a form of appreciation for their participation. Through this activity, the PKK students hoped that the public would gain a better understanding of the importance of early detection, prevention of transmission, and adherence to TB treatment. The health education conducted within the hospital environment is expected to become one of the efforts to increase public awareness regarding TB, which remains a public health problem in Indonesia.
This PKRS activity was successfully implemented through the collaboration of the students with their academic and clinical supervisors and received enthusiastic responses from the patients and patients’ family members who participated in the educational sessions until the end.
