GEMILANG Arrives at Bhaskara Sari: Unair Nursing Students Encourage Residents to Maintain Kidney Health

NERS NEWS — Group 1, Class A4, Cohort 2024 students of the Bachelor of Nursing Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (Unair), successfully organized a Project Based Learning (PjBL) activity entitled “GEMILANG (Community Education Movement to Protect Kidneys): Screening, Education, and Early Detection of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)” at the RT 010/RW 002 Community Hall, Bhaskara Sari, on June 7, 2026. This activity was conducted as a tangible effort by students to increase public awareness of the importance of maintaining kidney health through education and early detection, while also implementing nursing knowledge directly within the community.

The GEMILANG series of activities began with a group exercise session attended by all committee members and residents, creating a warm and enthusiastic atmosphere from the beginning of the event. After the opening by the MC and the singing of the Indonesian national anthem, “Indonesia Raya,” the event continued with remarks from the Chief Organizer, Nadya Putri Pertiwi, as well as remarks from the representative of RW 002, Dewi Masithah, who welcomed the presence of the students in the community. As a symbol marking the beginning of the educational series, a certificate was ceremonially presented to a representative of the residents.

Before entering the educational session, the committee conducted an interactive brainstorming and sharing session, inviting residents to share their experiences and initial knowledge regarding Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). This session was followed by a pre-test to measure the participants’ baseline knowledge before the intervention. The educational materials were then delivered comprehensively. The active question-and-answer session was further strengthened by additional explanations from the academic supervisor, Herdina Mariyanti, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., Ph.D.

To maintain an enjoyable and participatory atmosphere, the committee included a games session featuring a 1990s song-guessing activity, which was enthusiastically welcomed by the residents. The activity concluded with a post-test, the distribution of leaflets containing a barcode linked to an artificial intelligence (AI)-based video on Chronic Kidney Disease as a form of integration of the Nursing Information Systems course, and the distribution of certificates at the residents’ request. Awards were also presented to the most active residents and the winners of the games during the awarding session before the activity ended with a group documentation session.

The GEMILANG activity was attended by residents of RT 010/RW 002, Bhaskara Sari, and was accompanied by two lecturers from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, namely Herdina Mariyanti, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., Ph.D., as the academic supervisor who also provided reinforcement of the educational materials, and Dr. Eka Mishbahatul Mar’ah Has, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep. The activity was held at the RT 010/RW 002 Community Hall, Bhaskara Sari, on June 7, 2026, and was fully organized by Group 1, Class A4, Cohort 2024 students of the Bachelor of Nursing Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga.

This activity was motivated by the high prevalence of chronic kidney disease in the community, which often goes undetected in its early stages due to limited knowledge and awareness of its risk factors. GEMILANG emerged as a direct response by students to the real needs within the surrounding community, while also serving as a platform for developing communication competencies, teamwork, and the direct application of nursing knowledge within society. This activity aims to improve residents’ health literacy, particularly regarding the prevention and early detection of CKD, as a tangible form of support for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal 3 on Good Health and Well-Being, Goal 4 on Quality Education through community-based learning, and Goal 17 on Partnerships for the Goals through close collaboration between educational institutions and the community.

The Chief Organizer, Nadya Putri Pertiwi, expressed her gratitude for the warm welcome and extraordinary enthusiasm shown by the residents throughout the activity. “We are very pleased to see that the residents were so enthusiastic and open to discussion. This proves that the community truly needs health information that is relevant to their daily conditions,” she stated. Similar enthusiasm was reflected in the residents’ active participation throughout the brainstorming, question-and-answer, and games sessions, considering that the topic of CKD was directly related to the health conditions experienced by several residents. The residents appeared enthusiastic because the educational discussions were considered highly relevant to their own health conditions.

This activity is related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely:

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being – through education, screening, and early detection of CKD to improve the kidney health status of the community.
  • SDG 4: Quality Education – through the implementation of community-based learning (PjBL) that connects academic theory with real-world practice in the field.
  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – through collaboration between the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, and the RT 010/RW 002 community of Bhaskara Sari.

The GEMILANG activity serves as tangible evidence of the commitment of the students and the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, in contributing to improving public health through a community-based educational approach. Through the spirit of collaboration established between academic institutions and residents, it is hoped that similar programs can continue to develop and reach broader segments of society, so that awareness of the importance of kidney health becomes more widespread and the incidence of CKD can be reduced from an early stage.
