GEN-SEHAT, Unair Young Nurses Educate Adolescents in Kedung Cowek about the Dangers of Smoking, Alcohol, and Drugs

NERS NEWS — Surabaya, September 12, 2026 — Young Nurses of the Nursing Profession Education Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (Unair), Batch B27, Community Nursing Rotation, Wave 2, Kenjeran Community Health Center, conducted a health promotion activity entitled GEN-SEHAT (Great Generation without Cigarettes, Alcohol, and Drugs) for adolescents of Karang Taruna RW 03, Kedung Cowek Urban Village, Bulak District, Surabaya City.

The activity, which took place at the NU Community Hall of RW 03, Kedung Cowek Urban Village, on Saturday (September 12, 2026), addressed the topic of the dangers of smoking, alcohol, and drugs, accompanied by a demonstration on the dangers of cigarette smoke to the body and free health examinations for participants.

The GEN-SEHAT program was conducted as a follow-up to the results of a community health assessment conducted among adolescents in RW 03. Of the 37 adolescents who participated in the assessment, 14 adolescents (37.8%) reported smoking behavior. In addition, most adolescents spent their free time gathering with peers and obtaining health information through social media.

These findings became the basis for the need for promotive and preventive efforts that can increase adolescents’ knowledge and awareness regarding the risks of addictive substance use. Through GEN-SEHAT, adolescents were provided with information about the types and dangers of drugs, the effects of smoking on the body, the dangers of alcohol consumption, as well as ways to prevent and avoid risky behaviors.

The activity was packaged interactively through material presentation, demonstrations, discussions, and question-and-answer sessions. The demonstration of the dangers of cigarette smoke was conducted to provide a direct illustration of the effects of exposure to cigarette smoke so that participants not only received information theoretically but could also understand its effects more concretely.

In addition to education, participants also received free health examinations, including blood pressure measurement, blood glucose testing, weight and height measurement, as well as examination using a CO Analyzer. The examinations were conducted as part of efforts to increase participants’ awareness of their health conditions and the importance of undergoing regular health check-ups.

Participants’ enthusiasm was evident throughout the activity. Participants actively followed the series of activities, paid attention to the materials presented, asked questions, and discussed various health issues related to smoking and lifestyle.

The evaluation results showed an increase in participants’ knowledge after the education was provided. This indicated an increase in participants’ understanding of the dangers of smoking, alcohol, and drugs, as well as prevention efforts after participating in the activity.

Through the GEN-SEHAT activity, Young Nurses of the Faculty of Nursing, Unair, hoped that adolescents in RW 03, Kedung Cowek Urban Village, would increasingly understand the risks of addictive substance use, be able to refuse invitations from friends or their environment to try cigarettes, alcohol, or drugs, and choose more positive and healthy activities.

This activity is also expected to become part of sustainable efforts to build a healthy adolescent environment through collaboration among adolescents, Karang Taruna, families, the community, health cadres, and healthcare professionals.
