NERS NEWS – Efforts to increase public awareness regarding hypertension management continue through educational initiatives. Nursing Professional Program students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, organized a Hospital Health Education (PKRS) session titled “Maintaining Blood Pressure through Hypertension Exercise” on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at Ward 3A, Grha Trimed, Universitas Airlangga Hospital. The event targeted patients’ families to enhance both their knowledge and practical skills in managing blood pressure independently.
The PKRS program was designed not only to deliver information but also to serve as an active learning platform. Speakers provided a comprehensive presentation on hypertension, covering its definition, causes, and the potential risks if not properly controlled. Furthermore, participants were introduced to hypertension exercise as an easy and effective non-pharmacological intervention to help stabilize blood pressure.
Moving beyond one-way communication, the session combined lectures, interactive discussions, and live demonstrations. Following the presentation, participants were invited to practice hypertension exercise movements step-by-step under the guidance of a demonstrator. The atmosphere was conducive and participatory, with attendees showing great enthusiasm in following the routines and interacting throughout the session.
The initiative was spearheaded by Nursing Professional students and involved families of patients in Ward 3A. Held from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM GMT+7, the activity proved effective within its limited timeframe, successfully achieving its educational objectives. The participants’ enthusiasm was evident in the active Q&A session, where they related the material to their own health experiences.
During the discussion, various questions were raised, ranging from symptoms resembling hypertension despite normal blood pressure readings to the recommended frequency of the exercises and their safety for patients with specific conditions, such as minor strokes. The speakers provided contextual and easy-to-understand explanations, ensuring participants gained relevant insights into their respective conditions.
This program was motivated by the high prevalence of hypertension, which often goes unnoticed by those affected. Known as the “silent killer,” hypertension can develop without clear symptoms while posing a risk for serious complications. Therefore, education combined with direct practice is a vital approach to raising awareness and encouraging behavioral changes, particularly through simple physical activities like hypertension exercise.
One of the speakers emphasized that hypertension exercise is a simple step that the public can perform independently. “By doing these exercises regularly and according to one’s ability, blood pressure can be better controlled and the risk of complications can be minimized,” they stated.
This activity contributes to the achievement of several Sustainable Development Goals:
- SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being): Through promotive and preventive efforts in controlling non-communicable diseases.
- SDG 4 (Quality Education): By providing applicable and accessible health education to the community.
Through this PKRS initiative, it is hoped that patients’ families will not only understand the importance of hypertension control but also be able to implement simple steps like hypertension exercise in their daily lives. Moving forward, similar educational activities are expected to grow as part of the ongoing contribution of healthcare professionals and educational institutions to improving public health quality.
