NERS NEWS – Students of the Nursing Study Program, Universitas Airlangga, Group C2, conducted Group Activity Therapy (GAT) using simple counting methods for older adults at UPTD Griya Wreda Jambangan, Surabaya, on 6–10 April 2026. This activity aimed to enhance the cognitive function of older adults through interactive sessions facilitated directly by the students.
The GAT activity adopted a simple-counting theme, which included basic addition and subtraction exercises. The implementation involved interactive lectures, demonstrations, hands-on practice, and group discussions. The older adults were provided with simple arithmetic worksheets tailored to their individual abilities, accompanied by intensive assistance from the students throughout the session.
This activity was carried out by Group C2 Nursing students of Universitas Airlangga, who took on roles as moderators, presenters, facilitators, and observers, under the supervision of academic and clinical instructors. The session took place on 10 April 2026 at 09.00 WIB, after the Dhuha prayer at the prayer room of UPTD Griya Wreda Jambangan, Surabaya, with participation from the older adult residents of the facility.
The activity was motivated by the importance of maintaining cognitive function in older adults, especially in aspects such as concentration, memory, and basic arithmetic skills. Through structured cognitive stimulation, the older adults are expected to remain mentally active and improve social interaction. Additionally, the activity serves as a learning opportunity for the students to apply gerontological nursing concepts directly in a community setting.
The implementation of this activity provided tangible benefits for both the older adults and the students. The older adults received useful cognitive stimulation, while the students gained practical experience. It is hoped that similar activities can continue to be developed as a form of Universitas Airlangga’s contribution to improving public health, especially among the older adult population.
