NERS NEWS — Students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, carried out a Project-Based Learning (PJBL) activity entitled LENTERA (Educational Steps for Planned Pregnancy to Prevent Maternal Complications and Optimize Child Growth and Development from a Sociocultural Perspective) on Friday (May 22, 2026) at the RW 6 Community Hall, Kapas Madya Baru Subdistrict, Tambaksari District, Surabaya. This activity aimed to improve public knowledge regarding maternal and child health through health education and screening.
The activity began with participant registration and health screening, which included blood pressure, weight, and height measurements for mothers, as well as child growth and development screening using the Pre-Screening Development Questionnaire (KPSP). In addition, participants completed a pre-test before the educational session and a post-test after the activity as a form of learning evaluation. The materials presented covered the importance of planned pregnancy, routine antenatal care (ANC), prevention of pregnancy risks through controlling the 4T factors (too young, too old, too frequent, and too close), the use of the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Handbook, and efforts to optimize child growth and development through appropriate parenting practices and nutritional fulfillment. The educational session was delivered interactively through discussions and question-and-answer sessions with participants.

In its implementation, students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, collaborated with supervising lecturers, the Surabaya Great Cadres (Kader Surabaya Hebat/KSH), and the community of RW 6, Kapas Madya Baru Subdistrict. This activity targeted women of reproductive age, mothers, and children as groups that play important roles in achieving family health. The collaboration was expected to strengthen the community’s role in maintaining family health through the utilization of available health information and services.
The LENTERA PJBL was conducted as an effort to improve community health literacy. Through the education provided, participants were expected to understand the importance of pregnancy planning, recognize risk factors during pregnancy, and implement parenting practices that support optimal child growth and development. This activity also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by increasing public awareness of the importance of family health.

Appreciation for the activity was expressed by a representative of the Surabaya Great Cadres (KSH). “From this morning’s event, Alhamdulillah, we gained a great deal of knowledge from this educational session. Hopefully, what we have learned will be beneficial and useful for our families and the surrounding community,” she stated.
The LENTERA activity also received positive responses from participants. One participant expressed appreciation for the program that had been conducted. “This activity is very beneficial for the community. Hopefully, it will continue to improve and be sustained in the future so that more people can learn from the materials provided by Universitas Airlangga students,” she said.
Through the LENTERA activity, students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, not only applied the knowledge they had acquired during their studies but also sought to make a meaningful contribution to society through promotive and preventive approaches. It is hoped that this activity will encourage the community to take a more active role in maintaining family health and utilizing health information as a basis for making informed decisions in daily life.
