NERS NEWS – Professional Nursing students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR), successfully organized a Hospital Health Education (PKRS) program themed “Powerlessness in Patients and Families.” The session was held in the outpatient clinic waiting area of the Psychiatric Unit at RSD Prof. dr. Moeljono, Surabaya, on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, from 07:00 AM to 07:30 AM WIB. Attended by 15 outpatients and family members, this interactive campaign aimed to elevate public understanding regarding the definition, causes, impacts, and coping strategies for powerlessness, thereby optimizing the holistic psychiatric rehabilitation process.

During the educational session, the student team delivered comprehensive materials covering the clinical definition of powerlessness, predisposing and precipitating factors, signs and symptoms, and its psychological impact on patients. The psychoeducation heavily emphasized the clinical importance of fostering a positive mindset, identifying the patient’s remaining strengths and capabilities, boosting motivation through meaningful daily tasks, maintaining strict medication adherence, and reinforcing the family unit’s pivotal role throughout the rehabilitation journey. The material was delivered through interactive lectures, localized focus group discussions, and active Q&A blocks, allowing attendees to share personal experiences and gain practical solutions tailored to their clinical challenges.

The target audience involved 15 individuals—comprising psychiatric outpatients and their respective caregivers—who were waiting for their clinical consultations at the RSD Prof. dr. Moeljono Psychiatric Clinic. The participants displayed profound enthusiasm, which was highly evident through their active engagement in discussions and their proficiency in addressing the evaluation questions presented by the students at the end of the session.

This PKRS initiative serves as a crucial promotive and preventive outreach to accelerate mental health literacy, specifically addressing the phenomenon of powerlessness that frequently engulfs both psychiatric patients and their primary caregivers during long-term treatments. The education is designed to empower patients to recognize their self-potential, solidify adaptive coping mechanisms, and optimize the family’s function as the core support system. Furthermore, this campaign directly supports the global framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically:

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being: Maximizing psychiatric health outcomes and community well-being through targeted mental health promotion.

SDG 4: Quality Education: Providing high-quality, accessible public health literacy that strengthens community capacity in proactive health preservation.

Through this clinical outreach framework, it is envisioned that patients and their families will become increasingly vigilant in identifying and conquering powerlessness as a key milestone in mental health recovery. Sustained psychoeducation is highly anticipated to elevate the overall quality of life for psychiatric patients, fortify familial support systems, and accelerate the creation of comprehensive, patient-centered, and welfare-oriented mental health services.
