Nursing Profession Students of UNAIR Educate Cancer Patients on Infection Prevention through PKRS

NERS NEWS — Group 10 of the Nursing Profession Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a Hospital Health Education (PKRS) session on infection prevention for cancer patients and their families. The activity took place in the chemotherapy care unit (IOT) and aimed to improve awareness regarding the importance of maintaining hygiene, practicing safe food consumption, and recognizing early signs and symptoms of infection.

The education session covered basic concepts of infection as a condition caused by pathogenic microorganisms that may lead to inflammation and complications, particularly in cancer patients whose immune systems are weakened. The material included the definition of infection, along with signs and symptoms such as fever above 38°C, redness and swelling, discharge resembling pus, and unexplained fatigue.

During the activity, students delivered education directly using interactive leaflet media. The topics addressed proper mask usage, handwashing procedures based on standards, and the importance of maintaining personal and environmental hygiene. Patients and families were also informed about principles of safe dietary practices, including consuming well-balanced nutritious foods, thoroughly cooked meals, and avoiding raw or unhygienic food.

The purpose of this activity was to enhance patients’ and families’ understanding of infection prevention during cancer treatment. The education emphasized the importance of adopting clean and healthy living behaviors, adhering to healthcare recommendations, and fulfilling proper nutritional needs to improve immune function.

This initiative aligns with the efforts to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being
  • SDG 4: Quality Education

Through this PKRS activity, it is expected that patients and their families will be able to independently and consistently implement infection prevention measures in daily life. This effort is anticipated to reduce the risk of complications, support optimal recovery, and improve the quality of life of cancer patients.
