Nursing Profession Students of Unair Educate Parents on Increasing Children’s Learning Interest

NERS NEWS — Nursing Profession students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, Wave 1, Community Nursing Practice, conducted a health education activity on “Increasing Children’s Learning Interest: Understanding and Supporting Children with Learning Interest Difficulties” for participants of the Toddler Class at the Gebang Putih Auxiliary Community Health Center (PUSTU), RW 01. The activity was held on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, in the waiting room of the Auxiliary Community Health Center. The activity aimed to improve parents’ understanding of learning interest difficulties in children and ways to support and increase children’s learning motivation so that they can grow and develop optimally.

The education was delivered through interactive lectures, group discussions, and question-and-answer sessions. The material covered the definition of learning interest difficulties in children, signs and symptoms that may appear, contributing factors, impacts on children’s development, and the role of parents and the environment in increasing children’s learning interest. Participants were also given information about various strategies that can be implemented to increase children’s learning interest, such as creating enjoyable learning activities, providing positive motivation, establishing appropriate study schedules, developing children’s interests and talents, managing gadget use, and providing emotional support.

During the activity, the students also paid particular attention to gadget use among children. Participants were encouraged to understand that gadget use should be supervised and governed by clear rules established by parents. Parents can limit gadget use time, select age-appropriate content, and accompany children when using digital devices. Children are also encouraged to engage in alternative activities such as playing, studying, interacting with their surroundings, and participating in activities that support motor and social development.

The health education activity was conducted interactively through discussion and question-and-answer sessions with the participants. One participant, Mrs. Iin, asked about ways to prevent gadget addiction in children, including whether gadgets may be given to children and how their use should be limited. Through the discussion, participants gained an understanding that proper supervision and good communication between parents and children are important aspects of gadget use so that it can remain beneficial without causing dependency.

This activity was conducted by Nursing Profession students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, Wave 1, Community Nursing Practice, targeting participants of the Toddler Class at the Gebang Putih Auxiliary Community Health Center, RW 01. Through this education, participants are expected to be able to recognize signs of learning interest difficulties in children, understand the factors that may influence them, and provide support according to children’s needs.

Providing education about children’s learning interest is expected to strengthen the role of parents in creating a comfortable, positive, and enjoyable learning environment. Parents are also expected not only to focus on children’s learning outcomes, but also to appreciate their learning process and efforts, avoid comparing them with other children, and accompany them when they experience learning difficulties.

This health education activity is one form of promotive effort to improve health literacy and child development through family empowerment. With increased parental understanding of children’s learning interests and needs, children are expected to receive appropriate support to optimally develop their abilities, interests, talents, and potential.
