Nursing Profession Students of Unair Provide Health Education for the Elderly through SEGER (Exercise, Movement, Herbal Remedies)

NERS NEWS — Nursing Profession students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, Wave 1, Community Nursing Practice, conducted a Health Promotion (PROMKES) activity with the theme SEGER (Exercise, Movement, Herbal Remedies) for the elderly. This activity was one of the promotive and preventive efforts to improve the health status, independence, and quality of life of the elderly through health examinations, physical activity, and education on the use of herbal remedies.

The SEGER activity included free uric acid level examinations as one form of early detection of health problems among the elderly. This examination was expected to help participants become aware of their health conditions and increase awareness of the importance of undergoing regular health check-ups. In addition to health examinations, participants were also given education on the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle to maintain health in old age.

One of the SEGER activities was an elderly exercise session conducted together. The exercise aimed to help improve the fitness, balance, strength, and flexibility of the elderly. Participants were encouraged to make physical activity or movement a regular habit as part of a healthy lifestyle so that the elderly could remain active and carry out daily activities optimally.

In addition to physical activity, students also provided education on the use of herbal remedies as one of the supportive approaches to maintaining the health of the elderly. The herbal remedy introduced in this activity used natural ingredients such as ginger, turmeric, lemongrass, and lime. Participants were given information about the ingredients used, their benefits, and how to consume the herbal remedy. As a form of applying the education provided, the herbal remedy was also distributed to participants.

This activity was conducted by Nursing Profession students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, Wave 1, Community Nursing Practice, targeting the elderly and older adults in the community. Participants were given the opportunity to interact, participate in group exercise, undergo uric acid level examinations, and discuss ways to maintain health through physical activity and the use of natural ingredients.

Through the SEGER activity, students contributed to improving health literacy among the elderly, particularly regarding the importance of early detection, physical activity, and adopting a healthy lifestyle. This activity was expected to increase the awareness and motivation of the elderly to undergo regular health examinations and remain physically active in their daily lives.

The SEGER activity also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), through promotive and preventive efforts to improve the health and well-being of the elderly. Through this activity, the elderly are expected to maintain their health, improve their fitness, and adopt healthy behaviors so that their quality of life in old age can continue to improve.
