NERS NEWS — Surabaya, August 11, 2026 — Group 1 of the Nursing Profession Education Program (PPN) Batch B27, Community Nursing Rotation, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a Hospital Health Education (PKRS) activity in the form of health education on how to prevent and reduce pain caused by osteoarthritis at the RW 04 Deles Klampis Community Hall, Sukolilo District, Surabaya. The activity was conducted alongside the Chronic Disease Management Program (Prolanis), lasted for one hour from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., and was attended by 20 participants.

During the activity, participants received education on the definition of osteoarthritis, its causes and risk factors, signs and symptoms, factors that can worsen pain, and various ways to prevent and reduce pain complaints. The material was delivered through lectures and question-and-answer sessions supported by visual media in the form of posters and leaflets.

The activity was conducted by Group 1 Wave 1 Batch B27, Community Nursing Rotation, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, at the RW 04 Deles Klampis Community Hall, Sukolilo District, Surabaya. The education lasted for one hour and was attended by 20 participants, exceeding the initial target of 10 participants.

This activity aimed to increase public understanding of osteoarthritis and encourage participants to implement pain prevention and management efforts in their daily lives. The education was also directed at helping the community maintain joint function and improve quality of life through appropriate osteoarthritis management. This activity is in line with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, particularly through increasing the community’s knowledge and ability to maintain their health.

During the discussion session, participants and their families actively asked questions about osteoarthritis, ways to reduce pain, and actions that can be taken when experiencing complaints after activities or injuries. This interaction served as part of the evaluation and also demonstrated participants’ involvement throughout the education process.

In addition to lifestyle education, participants were introduced to various non-pharmacological approaches, such as maintaining body weight, engaging in physical activity according to their abilities, performing muscle-strengthening exercises, avoiding activities that place excessive stress on the joints, applying ergonomic principles, using assistive devices when necessary, adopting a healthy and balanced diet, and using warm or cold compresses as supportive therapy. Several muscle-strengthening exercises introduced included quadriceps setting, straight leg raise, mini squat, hamstring curl, and calf raise.

Participants were also encouraged to undergo regular health check-ups, especially if they experienced persistent joint pain or decreased ability to perform daily activities. Regular check-ups are necessary to monitor joint conditions, evaluate therapy, and help healthcare professionals adjust treatment according to the patient’s condition.

This PKRS activity has the most direct connection with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being — Through education on the prevention and management of osteoarthritis pain and increasing the community’s ability to maintain joint health.
  • SDG 4: Quality Education — Through health education activities that increase participants’ knowledge and ability to independently implement healthy behaviors.

The PKRS activity conducted by Group 1 Wave 1 Batch B27 is expected to increase public awareness to be more active in maintaining joint health and implementing a lifestyle that supports osteoarthritis management. Community-based health education is one form of contribution by nursing students to improve the community’s knowledge and ability to maintain their health independently.
