Nursing Professional Education Students Hold Health Education Session: Recognizing Hypertension as a “Silent Killer” That Requires Attention

NERS NEWS — Surabaya — A total of 39 visitors in the waiting room of Kenjeran Community Health Center (Puskesmas Kenjeran), Surabaya, received health education under the theme “Recognizing Hypertension: The Silent Killer to Be Aware Of.” The activity targeted productive-age adults and older adults, including patients and accompanying family members, and was conducted by Nursing Professional Education students who were undertaking their clinical practice at Kenjeran Community Health Center on Thursday morning, August 6, 2026.

The health education session was held to increase public awareness of the dangers of high blood pressure, which often develops without noticeable symptoms but can lead to potentially life-threatening complications.

The session was delivered interactively through lectures and discussions, supported by visual media in the form of posters and leaflet distribution. During the session, the nursing students presented several key points:

  • Blood Pressure Categories: The normal blood pressure range and the different categories of hypertension.
  • Risks and Symptoms: Why hypertension is known as a silent killer and how it can be detected through symptoms such as headaches and blurred vision, while also emphasizing that hypertension may occur without any symptoms.
  • Prevention and Control: Measures such as adopting a low-sodium diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and managing stress.
  • Myths vs. Facts: Clarifying misconceptions regarding the long-term use of antihypertensive medication.

Through this activity, participants were encouraged to monitor their blood pressure regularly, adopt a healthy lifestyle, and adhere to prescribed treatment to prevent complications caused by hypertension.
