Nursing Professional Students of Universitas Airlangga Conduct Hospital Health Promotion on Early Oral Intake for Patients’ Families in the Waiting Area of the Operating Theater at Universitas Airlangga Infectious Disease Hospital

NERS NEWS — On Thursday, July 23, 2026, Nursing Professional Program students from Batch B27, Critical Care Nursing rotation, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) program entitled “Step-by-Step Education on Early Oral Intake After Surgery” in the waiting area of the Operating Theater, GRHA TRIMED Building, 6th Floor, Universitas Airlangga Infectious Disease Hospital. The program was designed for patients’ family members to improve their understanding of safe food and fluid intake following surgical procedures.

Through this educational session, the students explained the importance of implementing early oral intake as part of postoperative recovery. The topics covered included the definition of early oral intake, the requirements and safety criteria for initiating oral fluids after surgery, the gradual stages of food and fluid intake, and the role of family members in supporting patients’ nutritional needs according to healthcare professionals’ recommendations. In addition to presentations using posters and leaflets, participants were given the opportunity to engage in discussions and ask questions about common situations encountered during postoperative care. Throughout the session, participants showed great enthusiasm by paying close attention to the presentation, actively asking questions, and successfully answering the evaluation questions provided by the presenters.

The educational program was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Laily Hidayati, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., Academic Supervisor, and Emi Widiastuti, S.Kep., Ns., Clinical Supervisor. The primary objective was to enhance family members’ knowledge of appropriate postoperative eating and drinking guidelines so they could provide effective support throughout the patient’s recovery process. This education is expected to promote faster gastrointestinal recovery, prevent complications associated with inappropriate food and fluid administration, and facilitate optimal healing.

This Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) program supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by promoting health through preventive, promotive, and educational initiatives within healthcare settings. Furthermore, the program reflects Universitas Airlangga‘s commitment to implementing the Tri Dharma of Higher Education through community service and continuous improvement of healthcare quality. This commitment aligns with Universitas Airlangga‘s achievement in the QS World University Rankings, where it is ranked #287 globally. This accomplishment serves as motivation for students to continue contributing to public health through innovative, evidence-based educational activities that address patients’ needs.

Through this program, patients’ families are expected to gain a better understanding of the appropriate timing for resuming food and fluid intake after surgery, the importance of following healthcare professionals’ instructions, and their active role in supporting patients’ nutritional recovery. Ultimately, families are expected to participate more effectively in the caregiving process, contributing to a faster, safer, and more effective recovery.
