Nursing Professional Students of Universitas Airlangga Hold Coloring Play Therapy to Reduce the Impact of Hospitalization on Children

NERS NEWS — Nursing Professional Program students from the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Airlangga who are currently undergoing clinical practice in Pediatric Nursing at Bona 2 Ward of RSUD Dr. Soetomo held a coloring play therapy activity on Friday, May 8, 2026. The activity, themed “Coloring Play Therapy to Reduce the Impact of Hospitalization on Children,” was intended for preschool-aged pediatric patients undergoing hospitalization in Bona 2 Ward.

The atmosphere of the activity was warm and filled with enthusiasm. The children appeared actively engaged in choosing colors, completing pictures, and sharing their artwork with the students and parents. The students also provided direct assistance to each child to ensure they remained comfortable and motivated to participate in the activity until completion. Several children also began to confidently interact with healthcare workers and no longer felt afraid when accompanied by nurses or student practitioners.

During the activity, the students also incorporated simple education regarding the importance of healthy habits, especially handwashing, to prevent the spread of germs and diseases. The material was delivered through the pictures being colored, making it easier for children to understand. This educational approach through play was considered effective because children could learn while still feeling comfortable during hospitalization.

This play therapy activity became one form of implementing holistic nursing care that not only focuses on the patient’s physical condition but also pays attention to the psychological needs and growth and development of children. At the end of the activity, the children appeared happier, more cooperative, and more confident in showing their drawings. The patients’ parents also expressed appreciation for the activity, which was considered helpful in making children feel more relaxed and entertained during their treatment in the hospital. The coloring play therapy in Bona 2 Ward at RSUD Dr. Soetomo became a tangible form of synergy between education, healthcare services, and efforts to improve the quality of pediatric care during hospitalization.
