Nursing Students of Universitas Airlangga Brought Joy to the Elderly Through Creative Group Activity Therapy at UPTD Liponsos Kalijudan

NERS NEWS — PKK (Nursing Clinical Practice) students of the Faculty of Nursing Group A5–A8 carried out a Group Activity Therapy (TAK) activity at UPTD Liponsos Kalijudan on May 13, 2026. This activity was attended by elderly residents through activities such as coloring keychains and making butterfly- and flower-shaped origami, which were later hung above each elderly resident’s bed as a form of creative therapy, entertainment, and emotional support.

The TAK activity began with an introduction session and brief instructions regarding the activities that would be carried out. The students then guided the elderly residents to color keychains using various color choices in order to create attractive and creative works. After that, the elderly residents were invited to make butterfly- and flower-shaped origami with direct assistance from the students. The completed origami was then arranged and hung above each elderly resident’s bed as a simple decoration that provided a more cheerful and comfortable atmosphere in their living environment.

This activity involved PKK students of the Faculty of Nursing Group A5–A8, elderly residents of UPTD Liponsos Kalijudan, as well as local assistants and staff members. The activity took place on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at UPTD Liponsos Kalijudan Surabaya. During the activity, the students actively assisted the elderly residents to ensure that every participant could comfortably and enjoyably follow the coloring and origami-folding process.

The implementation of TAK aimed to improve fine motor stimulation, creativity, social interaction, and the psychological well-being of the elderly through educational and recreational activities. This activity was also motivated by the importance of providing non-pharmacological therapy for the elderly so that they remain active, productive, and motivated in carrying out daily activities. In addition to providing benefits for the elderly, this activity became a learning medium for students in applying therapeutic approaches and nursing communication directly within the community. The activity was in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 concerning Good Health and Well-Being and SDG 4 concerning Quality Education through efforts to improve health and learning based on field practice.

Through this Group Activity Therapy activity, PKK students of the Faculty of Nursing hope that the elderly residents can experience happiness, peace, and motivation to remain active in their daily lives. The artworks displayed above the elderly residents’ beds are expected to become symbols of care, creativity, and emotional support for the residents of UPTD Liponsos Kalijudan. In the future, similar activities are expected to continue as a form of students’ real contribution in supporting elderly health, community service, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
