Nursing Students of Universitas Airlangga Educate Patients on Hypertension Management at IRNA 5A

NERS NEWS — Clinical Nursing Practice (PKK) students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga organized a health education program titled “Control Hypertension with CERDIK and PATUH” for patients and their families in IRNA 5A Graha Trimed Ward at Universitas Airlangga Hospital on Thursday, April 30, 2026. The activity aimed to improve patients’ knowledge about hypertension and the importance of controlling blood pressure to prevent more serious complications.

During the activity, the students provided educational materials on the definition of hypertension, risk factors, signs and symptoms, complications, and strategies for controlling hypertension through a healthy lifestyle. The education session was conducted interactively through lectures and question-and-answer discussions, enabling participants to understand the material more easily.

The presenters from the PKK student group explained that hypertension is one of the non-communicable diseases often referred to as a silent killer because it frequently causes no symptoms in its early stages. Therefore, people need to monitor their blood pressure regularly and adopt healthy lifestyle habits to reduce the risk of complications such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney disorders.

“We hope patients and their families can understand the importance of controlling blood pressure and applying the principles of CERDIK and PATUH in daily life. Simple steps such as maintaining a healthy diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and adhering to treatment can help prevent hypertension complications,” said one of the presenters.

In addition to the educational session, participants were also given the opportunity to discuss and ask questions related to their health conditions. The participants’ enthusiasm was evident from their active involvement during the discussion and question-and-answer session.

Through this health education program, students not only implemented the nursing knowledge they had learned but also contributed to promotive and preventive efforts within the hospital setting. This activity is expected to increase awareness among patients and families to take an active role in maintaining health and controlling hypertension risk factors.

The health education program “Control Hypertension with CERDIK and PATUH” supports the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-Being through improving health literacy and preventing non-communicable diseases. In addition, this activity also supports SDG 4: Quality Education through the provision of health education for patients and their families, as well as SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through collaboration between the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga and Universitas Airlangga Hospital in improving healthcare service quality.
