NERS NEWS — Surabaya — Nursing Profession students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (Unair), conducted an education session on Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (Perilaku Hidup Bersih dan Sehat/PHBS) for students of SD Muhammadiyah 9 Sukolilo Baru, Surabaya, on Friday (7/8/2026).
The activity, which began at 9:00 a.m. local time, carried the theme “Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS) at School.” The education aimed to increase students’ knowledge and awareness of the importance of maintaining personal hygiene and the cleanliness of the school environment as part of efforts to prevent diseases and develop healthy habits from an early age.
The program was initiated by Groups 1, 2, and 3 of Wave 1 of the B27 cohort of Nursing Profession students. The activity was conducted under the guidance of academic advisors Dr. Retno Indarwati, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., Aziz Nashiruddin Habibie, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., and Sylvia Dwi Wahyuni, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep. The activity was also supported by clinical supervisor Afif Nailil Huda, S.Kep., Ns.
The activity began with an interactive opening session led by the master of ceremonies. This approach encouraged students to actively follow the material and participate in each session. The main material was delivered by Viktoria Abuk and Nabilah Salsia Hamzah, with Mohammad Ferdy Arrosyd and Martina Peda Luba serving as facilitators. The material was presented using simple language to make it easier for students to understand.
Several topics were covered, including the importance of washing hands with soap, choosing healthy and safe snacks, using clean toilets, and preventing mosquito breeding sites in the environment through the 3M movement.
In addition to providing verbal education, the students also invited participants to practice the six proper steps of handwashing directly. This demonstration method allowed students not only to receive information but also to gain practical experience that could be applied in their daily lives. The activity became more interactive through ice-breaking and discussion sessions. Students were given opportunities to participate and share their understanding of clean and healthy living behaviors at school and at home.
The activity was supported by the division of responsibilities among the students, including material preparation, activity management, equipment provision, participant facilitation, and documentation. This collaboration helped ensure that the entire education session ran in an orderly and conducive manner.

PHBS education in schools is one of the promotive and preventive efforts that can be implemented from school age. Knowledge of hand hygiene, sanitation, food safety, and environmental cleanliness is expected to help students recognize health-risk behaviors and develop healthier habits.
The activity also supported efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by increasing health awareness and knowledge from an early age.
“We hope that this education will not stop with today’s activity but will be applied in the students’ daily lives. Simple habits such as washing hands properly, choosing healthy snacks, and maintaining environmental cleanliness can be the first steps toward building healthy living behaviors from an early age,” said one of the student organizers.
Through this activity, Nursing Profession students from the Faculty of Nursing, Unair, are expected to contribute to improving health literacy in the community, particularly among school-aged children. The interactive education is also expected to help students consistently practice clean and healthy living behaviors both at school and within their families.
