PKRS on the 6th Floor Inpatient Room of Universitas Airlangga Hospital: Stroke Awareness Education as an Effort to Prevent Disability and Death

NERS NEWS — Nursing Profession Education Program students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a Hospital Health Education (PKRS) activity on Friday, August 11, 2026, from 10:00–10:30 a.m. WIB, located in the 6th Floor Inpatient Room of Universitas Airlangga Hospital (RSUA). This activity addressed the topic “Be Alert to Stroke Attacks”, which was aimed at patients’ families in the 6th Floor Inpatient Room of Universitas Airlangga Hospital. This activity was conducted as part of health education to increase public knowledge and behaviors in being aware of stroke attacks.

This PKRS activity aimed for participants to know and understand the definition of stroke, types of stroke, causes of stroke, signs of a stroke attack, first aid for stroke attacks, as well as participate in a demonstration and joint practice of anti-stroke exercises. The education was delivered using leaflets and educational video presentations through lecture and question-and-answer (brainstorming) methods.

In this activity, the education team provided an explanation of stroke as a condition in which the function of the nervous system is suddenly impaired due to blockage or rupture of blood vessels in the brain, causing brain tissue to experience a lack of oxygen and nutrients. Participants were also provided with education about the types and risk factors of stroke, the warning signs “SeGeRa Ke RS”, first aid using the FAST method during the 4.5-hour golden period, as well as prevention through CERDIK behaviors.

As one of the stroke prevention measures through regular physical exercise, the education team demonstrated and invited participants to perform the Anti-Stroke Exercise, namely simple physical exercises with moderate-intensity tapping on the extremities, shoulders, spine, and abdomen, which are beneficial for improving blood circulation, maintaining muscle flexibility, stimulating brain function, and controlling stroke risk factors. During the exercise, participants appeared enthusiastic in demonstrating the movements from the video that was displayed.

The health education activity continued with a question-and-answer session to evaluate participants’ understanding of the material that had been presented. The moderator guided the evaluation session, and participants provided feedback interactively. The activity took place in an orderly and conducive manner, and participants were enthusiastic in following the stages of the health education and exercise practice.

The PKRS activity was carried out well and smoothly. Through this education, patients’ families are expected to be able to recognize stroke symptoms early, provide appropriate first aid, and implement preventive measures by controlling stroke risk factors in daily life.

The PKRS activity was conducted by Nursing Profession Education Practice students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, and accompanied by Clinical CI, Purwati, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., and Academic CI, Dr. Ika Nur Pratiwi, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep.
