
NERS NEWS – Surabaya, April 9, 2026. Health education regarding diabetes mellitus became a top priority in a community outreach initiative conducted by nursing students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga. Integrated into their Nursing Clinical Practice (PKK) rotation, the program was held at the IRNA 5A Ward, Graha Trimed, Universitas Airlangga Hospital (RSUA). The session addressed the theme “Prevention and Control of Diabetes Mellitus to Enhance Quality of Life,” aiming to improve public understanding of effective diabetes management. The student team delivered material highlighting the crucial roles of regular exercise, balanced nutrition, and proactive health maintenance in keeping blood glucose levels within a normal range. The education was provided directly to patients and their families in Room 503, IRNA 5A Graha Trimed RSUA, using accessible language to ensure the guidance can be easily integrated into daily routines.
The outreach campaign was carried out by the Unair nursing students under the direct supervision of the IRNA 5A Graha Trimed RSUA clinical nursing staff and academic advisors. Held in Room 503, the session was designed to be highly interactive, combining direct presentations, the distribution of informative leaflets, and a dynamic Q&A and discussion session. This localized approach aimed to maximize participant engagement, ensuring that vital health messages were delivered effectively and could be sustainably practiced in daily life.
This educational initiative sought to raise public awareness regarding the critical importance of blood sugar management through mindful daily lifestyle choices. Diabetes mellitus is a widely prevalent chronic illness that can affect individuals across all age demographics. Consequently, blood glucose monitoring warrants heightened attention, complemented by a healthy diet and consistent physical activity as essential steps to mitigate future health complications. This program reflects a successful collaboration between hospital healthcare services and clinical education, offering tangible benefits to the community by teaching families how to actively safeguard their metabolic health. Furthermore, this activity supports the advancement of Sustainable Development Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, which focuses on elevating public health standards and overall quality of life.
Through this initiative, it is envisioned that the community will become more vigilant about maintaining a healthy lifestyle to keep blood sugar levels stable, ultimately contributing to a healthier and more resilient future generation.
