Professional Nursing Students of Universitas Airlangga Conduct Educational Session on Patient Safety Goals and Proper Waste Segregation

NERS NEWS — Surabaya, May 13, 2026 — Students of the Professional Nursing Program from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, who were undergoing Pediatric Nursing clinical practice in the Bona 1 Ward at RSUD Dr. Soetomo conducted a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) activity themed “Let’s Get to Know Patient Safety Goals (PSG) and Proper Waste Segregation.” This activity was intended for pediatric patients and their parents as an effort to improve knowledge, awareness, and vigilance regarding patient safety and proper waste segregation practices.

The educational session was carried out through interactive lectures and two-way discussions tailored to the characteristics of both children and parents so that the material could be delivered in a more engaging, understandable, and practical manner. The topics presented included the definition of patient safety goals, patient identification, infection prevention through handwashing, and proper waste segregation according to waste types. During this health promotion activity, the Professional Nursing students of Universitas Airlangga also invited all participants to practice handwashing together, allowing the educational material to be understood more easily.

The activity was attended enthusiastically by patients and their families. This was reflected in the participants’ active involvement during the question-and-answer and discussion sessions, as well as the parents’ ability to repeat the information that had been delivered. This educational activity aimed to strengthen the role of families in understanding the importance of patient safety goals during the treatment process in hospitals so that undesirable incidents could be prevented. The activity also represented a tangible contribution by the students in supporting efforts to improve patient safety in hospitals while contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, SDG 4: Quality Education, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.

Through this PKRS activity, the Professional Nursing students of Universitas Airlangga hoped that parents would better understand the importance of patient identification before nurses perform medical procedures and the importance of proper waste segregation. It is hoped that the education provided can be continuously applied during the treatment process in hospitals as well as in daily life. Through this activity, the Professional Nursing students also hope to continue making positive contributions to improving the quality of healthcare services through promotive and preventive education in order to create a safe, healthy, and comfortable hospital environment for patients and their families.
