NERS NEWS — Students of the Professional Nursing Program from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga conducted a Hospital Health Education (PKRS) activity themed “Post-Sectio Caesarea (SC) Wound Care” on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, in the Merpati Ward of RSUD Dr. Soetomo. This activity was intended for post-sectio caesarea patients and their families as an effort to improve knowledge regarding proper post-operative wound care during the recovery period at home.
The educational session lasted for 30 minutes, from 10.00 to 10.30 WIB, using interactive lectures, simple demonstrations, discussions, and question-and-answer methods. Educational media such as posters and leaflets were utilized to help participants better understand the material presented. The material covered the definition of post-SC surgical wounds, steps for wound care at home, signs of infection, nutrition that supports faster wound healing, and restrictions that should be avoided during the recovery process.
Participants appeared active and enthusiastic throughout the activity. Several family members asked questions regarding how to clean surgical wounds, recommended foods to accelerate healing, and signs of infection that should immediately be checked by healthcare professionals. A simple demonstration on proper hand hygiene and wound care also helped participants understand wound care procedures more easily.
This PKRS activity was organized by Group 3 A2 of the Maternity Nursing Practice Rotation, Professional Nursing Program students, with task assignments as follows: Intan Taniya as moderator, Rokhma Mista Febrianah as presenter, Rendra Wahyu Ismawan as facilitator and observer, and Vera Niken Wulandari as timekeeper and documentation coordinator. The activity was also supervised by academic and clinical instructors from RSUD Dr. Soetomo.
This educational session was motivated by the lack of understanding among patients and families regarding the importance of proper post-sectio caesarea wound care at home. Limited knowledge about wound hygiene, nutrition, and signs of infection may increase the risk of complications and slow down the recovery process for post-operative patients.
Through this educational activity, it is hoped that patients and their families will be able to independently perform proper wound care, maintain wound cleanliness, fulfill nutritional needs during the recovery period, and recognize signs of infection at an early stage so that the healing process can proceed optimally and post-operative complications can be prevented.
This activity also supported the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being, Goal 4: Quality Education, and Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals through collaboration between educational institutions and hospitals in improving public health education.
Overall, the PKRS activity regarding post-sectio caesarea (SC) wound care in the Merpati Ward of RSUD Dr. Soetomo was carried out smoothly and provided positive benefits for patients and their families. It is hoped that health education activities such as this can continue to be implemented as part of promotive and preventive efforts to improve the quality of healthcare services in hospitals.
