Recognize Gallstones: Group 8 Encourages Patients and Families Not to Ignore Upper Right Abdominal Pain

NERS NEWS — Surabaya, (September 3) — Group 8 of the Medical-Surgical Nursing (KMB) Rotation, Nursing Profession Program, Batch 49, conducted a Hospital Health Education (PKRS) activity entitled “Recognize Gallstones: Don’t Ignore Upper Right Abdominal Pain!” on Thursday, September 3, 2026. The activity was held in the IRNA 6A Ghra Trimed Ward, Universitas Airlangga Hospital, as an effort to increase patients’ and families’ knowledge about gallstones through the delivery of educational material and a question-and-answer session.

In this activity, participants received education about gallstones, starting from their definition, risk factors, signs and symptoms, management, and prevention. One of the points emphasized was the importance of recognizing upper right abdominal pain as a complaint that should not be ignored, especially when accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea or vomiting.

This PKRS activity was conducted by Group 8 of the Medical-Surgical Nursing Rotation and attended by patients and families in Room 606. The education was delivered interactively, with the material adjusted to make it easy to understand, followed by a discussion and question-and-answer session with the participants.

Through this activity, patients and families are expected to better recognize the risk factors and signs and symptoms of gallstones, making them more aware of the complaints they experience and less likely to delay medical examination when warning symptoms appear. This educational activity also supports the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-Being through increasing public knowledge and awareness of health.

Through the PKRS activity entitled “Recognize Gallstones: Don’t Ignore Upper Right Abdominal Pain!”, Group 8 of the Medical-Surgical Nursing Rotation, Nursing Profession Program, Batch 49, hopes that the education provided can help patients and families better understand gallstones, recognize their symptoms early, and increase awareness of maintaining health and seeking immediate medical assistance when experiencing complaints that may indicate gallstone-related problems.
