Representasi Ngembat: Designing an Iconic Plastic Bottle Gate by Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga Students in Ngembat Village, Mojokerto

NERS NEWS — Mojokerto – In an effort to strengthen the identity of the area and explore local potential, students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, as part of a community service program, designed an iconic gate as a representative welcoming symbol at the entrance gate of Ngembat Village, Gondang District, Mojokerto Regency. The design was expected to create a positive visual impact for the residents of Ngembat Village as well as visitors.

This community service activity focused on the “Representasi Ngembat” program, which was realized through the creation of an attractive, aesthetic, and easily recognizable village gate design. The design process was carried out comprehensively through an analysis of the area’s characteristics, a survey of strategic locations, and consideration of the gate’s structural aspects, ensuring that it would not only be visually appealing but also practical for construction by the village administration.

The “Representasi Ngembat” program was initiated by students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, in active collaboration with village officials and community leaders of Ngembat Village. The background of this program was based on the issue of limited community awareness regarding environmental cleanliness and preservation. Mr. Tri, the Head of Ngembat Village, stated, “People here usually burn their waste, plastic and things like that are thrown away and then burned directly,” he emphasized. The discussion took place on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at Ngembat Village Hall. The community had limited knowledge regarding the utilization of inorganic waste, particularly plastic bottles. The activity was conducted through a presentation by students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, followed by a discussion with the community. The concept of the Representasi Ngembat activity was to propose a gate made from plastic bottles by arranging the bottles to form the word “NGEMBAT” and then painting them red and white as a symbol of visual aesthetics.

Through the design of a gate that reflects the local identity and potential, this program aimed to reduce waste by utilizing inorganic waste, particularly plastic bottles, increase community knowledge about managing waste and transforming it into something more useful, and foster a sense of pride among residents while creating a positive long-term impression. This also served as a concrete form of support for achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17, Partnerships for the Goals. Representasi Ngembat was not merely an activity to create an attractive and easily recognizable village gate design as the identity of Ngembat Village. Instead, the program was designed so that the gate could serve as a welcoming landmark for anyone entering the village, while also reflecting its distinctive characteristics and potential. With a well-designed gate, the program was expected to foster a sense of pride among residents and create a positive impression.

“We are very happy and grateful to the students who have provided an innovative gate design for Ngembat Village. This can be a very important first step toward giving Ngembat Village a unique identity and attracting the attention of the wider community,” said Mr. Tri, Head of Ngembat Village.
