NERS NEWS – Project Based Learning is an activity carried out by students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, as a form of student learning implementation. SIGMA MOM 2026 is one of the Project Based Learning activities for the courses of Healthy and Acutely Ill Child Nursing, Maternity Nursing, and Psychosocial and Cultural Nursing, held on May 25, 2026, by Group 2, Class A3 A2024 of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga. This activity carries the theme “SIGMA MOM: Nutritional Status, Complementary Feeding (MPASI), and Breastfeeding for Mothers” and engaged the general public as its target audience, with a focus on prospective and breastfeeding mothers at the RW VI Community Hall, Pacar Kembang, Tambaksari District, Surabaya. The event, held at the RW VI Community Hall, was attended by more than 20 participants and received an enthusiastic welcome from residents.
The activity featured two core programs: health education on maternal and child nutritional status, breastfeeding, and age-appropriate complementary feeding (MPASI); followed by demonstrations covering how to read the Maternal and Child Health (KIA) Book’s growth monitoring section, showcasing three complementary food textures appropriate to each stage of a baby’s age, correct breastfeeding attachment techniques and positions, and how to burp a baby. Participants showed great enthusiasm from the morning, starting from the registration session through the demonstration series and interactive sessions.
The health education segment was delivered by two nursing students — Maria Paulin Cleosantris Tibo and Rafa Ayoma Giollea — who presented material on maternal and child nutritional status, breastfeeding, and age-appropriate complementary feeding, explaining how to meet children’s nutritional needs from an early age to support optimal growth and development. In addition, mothers were given guidance on introducing complementary foods according to age, the types of complementary foods available, and appropriate food textures for infants. The session was lively and critical, with active feedback from the audience through an interactive Q&A segment.
The demonstration was led by Raffa Nadiya Primatiana, followed by an interactive audience session that closed the series of SIGMA MOM 2026 events. Participants followed the entire program in an orderly and engaged manner. Based on the outcomes of the health education and demonstration, the audience demonstrated a solid understanding of child nutritional status — being able to name examples of carbohydrates, plant-based and animal proteins, and the MAKAN method (Makanan bergizi seimbang, Atur pola makan teratur, Kontrol pertumbuhan, Amankan kebersihan makanan, Nutrisi lengkap imunisasi aman — Balanced nutritious food, Regular meal scheduling, Growth monitoring, Food hygiene, Complete nutrition and safe immunization). The audience also showed sufficient understanding of immunization examples, the meaning of exclusive breastfeeding, the benefits of breast milk, and when complementary feeding should begin.
Participants’ enthusiasm was further evident during the Q&A session, which covered a range of topics including complementary feeding for babies experiencing constipation, introducing animal protein to infants with suspected allergies, the benefits of breastfeeding up to two years of age, and breast care during the breastfeeding period. Through the demonstration session, participants gained practical skills in reading growth charts in the KIA Book, identifying complementary food textures appropriate to a baby’s age, practicing correct breastfeeding attachment techniques and positions, and applying proper burping techniques.
SIGMA MOM 2026 is hoped to increase public knowledge and awareness regarding the importance of nutritional status, exclusive breastfeeding, and appropriate complementary feeding, in order to support optimal child growth and development and prevent nutritional problems from an early age.
