NERS NEWS — Students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, who are part of Group 10 of the Medical-Surgical Nursing (KMB) clinical rotation, conducted a Hospital Health Education (PKRS) session on Thursday (April 2, 2026) in the Operating Room (OR) of Universitas Airlangga Hospital (RSUA). The activity focused on nutritional fulfillment for post-operative patients and was aimed at patients’ families as part of an educational effort to support optimal recovery.
A total of nine patients’ family members participated enthusiastically in the session. The education was delivered using posters and leaflets to facilitate participants’ understanding of the material. During the session, students explained the importance of adequate nutritional intake for post-operative patients, considering that the body requires balanced nutrition to accelerate wound healing, enhance immunity, and prevent complications such as infections.
The materials covered various types of essential nutrients, including protein to support tissue repair, carbohydrates as a source of energy, and vitamins and minerals that contribute to strengthening the immune system. In addition, participants were provided with information on recommended foods, such as high-protein options (eggs, fish, and meat), as well as the importance of consuming fruits and vegetables. The students also explained foods that should be avoided, including high-fat foods, overly spicy dishes, and foods that may hinder the healing process.
The activity was conducted interactively, allowing participants to ask questions and engage in discussions regarding the conditions of the patients they were accompanying. Several participants asked about safe food choices after surgery, appropriate meal timing, and ways to improve appetite in patients experiencing decreased appetite following surgical procedures. This demonstrated the participants’ strong interest and active engagement throughout the session.
Overall, the PKRS activity ran smoothly without any significant obstacles. Participants appeared to understand the material well, as reflected in their responses and active participation during the discussion session. It is hoped that through this activity, patients’ families will be able to apply the knowledge gained in daily care, thereby playing an active role in accelerating the recovery process of post-operative patients.
