NERS NEWS — On Wednesday, June 17, 2026, Nursing Profession Program students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, Batch B27 Group D2.3, conducted a Hospital Health Promotion Program (PKRS) at the Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) Clinic of Universitas Airlangga Hospital with the theme “The Golden Hour After Birth: The Importance of Early Initiation of Breastfeeding.” This educational activity was carried out as an effort to improve mothers’ and families’ knowledge regarding the importance of Early Initiation of Breastfeeding (EIB) in supporting the success of exclusive breastfeeding. The health education session began at 09:00 AM and was attended by patients and family members waiting for services at the OBGYN Clinic.
The counseling session was conducted in a warm and interactive atmosphere. The activity began with an introduction by the Nursing Profession student team, followed by the presentation of materials regarding the definition of EIB, its benefits for both mother and baby, the appropriate timing, and the steps for implementing EIB after childbirth. The materials were delivered using simple and easy-to-understand language, allowing participants to follow the discussion effectively.
Participants showed enthusiasm from the beginning of the session. Several pregnant women and family members actively shared their experiences and asked questions regarding the breastfeeding process after childbirth. One of the most discussed topics was the best timing for EIB and its effect on breast milk production. The discussion reflected the participants’ strong interest in providing the best nutrition for babies from the earliest stage of life.
Through the evaluation session, most participants were able to explain the definition of EIB, the benefits for both mother and baby, and the importance of skin-to-skin contact immediately after childbirth. Participants also stated that they gained new knowledge that could help them prepare for breastfeeding and newborn care after delivery.
Overall, the PKRS activity was carried out smoothly, orderly, and in accordance with its objectives. It is hoped that the education provided will increase awareness among mothers and families to support the implementation of Early Initiation of Breastfeeding as an important first step toward successful exclusive breastfeeding and improved maternal and infant health.
