NERS NEWS — Surabaya – In an effort to create healthy children free from the threat of respiratory tract infections, Nursing Profession students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a health education activity in RW 03, Kedung Cowek Subdistrict, Bulak District, Surabaya, on Thursday (September 10, 2026).
The activity, which took place at the MWC NU Building in RW 03 Kedung Cowek, carried the theme “Healthy Children, Free from Pneumonia: Education on Preventing Respiratory Tract Infections in Toddlers through the Active Role of Parents.” This program was intended for the parents of students at the Integrated Early Childhood Education Post (PPT) Bintang Harapan. A total of 16 parents attended and accompanied their toddlers to listen to the presentation on the dangers of pneumonia, recognize the early signs and symptoms of respiratory tract infections, learn steps for independent prevention at home, and demonstrate proper cough etiquette. The main emphasis was placed on the importance of complete immunization, exclusive breastfeeding, adequate balanced nutrition, and maintaining the cleanliness of the living environment, including avoiding exposure to cigarette smoke and air pollution.
The activity took place in an interactive atmosphere. The participants appeared very enthusiastic and actively participated in the question-and-answer session. The questions raised also varied, such as whether mosquito repellent smoke can cause pneumonia, the initial steps to take when a toddler experiences coughing, a runny nose, or shortness of breath, and how to detect pneumonia in toddlers early. Through this education, the Nursing Profession students of Faculty of Nursing Unair hoped that parents’ awareness and knowledge in the Kedung Cowek area would continue to increase, so that the incidence of respiratory tract infections among toddlers could be optimally reduced and children’s respiratory health maintained, while also creating a safe and pneumonia-free environment for their growth and development.
