NERS NEWS – Surabaya, February 25, 2026. Students of the Nursing Profession Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, held a health education session on the prevention and early detection of breast cancer at the Kalijudan Public Health Center (Puskesmas), Surabaya. This activity is part of the clinical practice implementation for Community Nursing, aimed at increasing public knowledge and awareness regarding the vital role of early screening.
Themed “Recognize Breast Cancer: Prevent Before It’s Too Late!”, the session took place in the waiting area of the Kalijudan Health Center, targeting patients, their families, and visitors. The program was led by Group 2 (Batch A21) of the Nursing Profession students through lectures, discussions, and Q&A sessions.
The material presented included the definition of breast cancer, risk factors, early warning signs and symptoms, and preventive steps the public can take. Furthermore, participants were educated on the importance of SADARI (Breast Self-Examination or BSE) and SADANIS (Clinical Breast Examination or CBE) as primary methods for early detection.
During the event, students distributed educational leaflets containing comprehensive information on breast cancer and a step-by-step guide for self-examination. These materials are intended to help participants better understand the topic and serve as a reference they can study further at home.
Participants showed high enthusiasm throughout the session, actively engaging in discussions and asking questions about specific symptoms and the correct techniques for performing BSE. Through this initiative, it is hoped that the community will become more proactive about breast health and make routine early detection a habit.
This educational outreach represents the contribution of nursing students toward supporting health promotion programs in public health facilities. By increasing public literacy, it is expected that early detection efforts will rise, thereby minimizing delayed diagnoses.
The Nursing Profession students of Universitas Airlangga hope that through this education, the community will become more health-conscious and capable of taking early preventive measures to improve their overall quality of life and health standards.
