Students from the Bachelor of Nursing Program, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga conducted a health education session on the correct 6-step handwashing technique for patients in Barracks D and E at Liponsos Keputih Surabaya on Thursday, April 30, 2026. The activity aimed to improve patients’ knowledge and skills in maintaining hand hygiene as an effort to prevent infection.

The health education session on the correct 6-step handwashing technique was conducted through lectures, question-and-answer sessions, and live demonstrations for patients in Barracks D and E at Liponsos Keputih Surabaya. The material covered the definition of handwashing, its benefits, the critical moments for handwashing, types and duration, as well as the practice of the correct six-step handwashing technique. Participants not only received explanations but were also given the opportunity to practice the handwashing technique directly to enhance their understanding and skills. The activity was carried out by students of Group C7, Clinical Nursing Practice, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, namely Siti Nurul Farikha, Aurora, Ike Nurdian Febrianti, Rico Juan Firdansyah, and Sharfina Nasywa Hanifa under the academic supervision of Dr. Rizki Fitryasari, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., and clinical supervisor Mirzah Ahdiyah, S.Kep., Ns., on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at the transit room of Liponsos Keputih Surabaya.

This activity was motivated by the high risk of nosocomial infections in healthcare facilities due to a lack of awareness about hand hygiene. As such, this education aimed to improve health literacy and encourage behavioral changes toward a clean and healthy lifestyle among patients. Through this activity, patients are expected to be able to apply correct handwashing practices as a means of preventing the spread of disease. Furthermore, the activity also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), as a form of nursing students’ contribution to improving public health and strengthening collaboration in the health sector.

Through this outreach activity, patients at Liponsos Keputih are hoped to improve their awareness and skills in maintaining hand hygiene. This activity also serves as a contribution from nursing students toward improving public health and supporting the achievement of the SDGs in the health sector.
