NERS NEWS – A group of nursing students from the Faculty of Nursing at Universitas Airlangga (Unair), specifically Class A3, Cohort 2023, Group A6, conducted a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) session titled “The Importance of Protein for Pediatric Recovery” at the Pediatric Ward (Irna 4) on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at 10:00 WIB. The session employed a lecture format using PowerPoint presentations and educational leaflets, supplemented by a Q&A session, with the primary objective of enhancing families’ understanding of protein’s vital role in a child’s recovery process.
The 15-minute session was attended by six family members of patients. The curriculum focused on the functions of protein in tissue repair, immune system strengthening, and accelerating the healing of wounds and infections. The material was delivered in simple, communicative language to ensure accessibility for all participants. Following the presentation, the students facilitated a discussion, allowing attendees to ask questions and share their experiences while caring for their hospitalized children.
The topic was selected to address a common clinical challenge: reduced appetite during illness, which often leads to suboptimal nutritional intake. Through this education, the team aims to motivate families to provide high-protein meals in small, gradual, and tolerable portions. This initiative not only supports pediatric patient recovery but also aligns with the institution’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, and SDG 2: Zero Hunger, which emphasizes the necessity of adequate nutrition for all segments of society.
This activity was part of the students’ clinical practice module, supervised by Academic Supervisor Prof. Dr. Yuni Sufyanti Arief, S.Kp., M.Kes., and conducted under the guidance of Clinical Instructor (CI) Ners Widia Yuniarti, S.Kep., Ns. Feedback from parents indicated a better understanding of the importance of protein intake during their children’s hospital stays. It is hoped that such educational initiatives will continue as a student contribution toward improving the nutritional literacy of patients’ families, ultimately supporting comprehensive healthcare that prioritizes safety and optimal recovery for children.
