NERS NEWS – Fukuoka, Japan, July 17, 2026. A delegation from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (FKp Unair) participated in a series of learning sessions on Basic Life Support (BLS) and a disaster preparedness survey at the Japanese Red Cross Kyushu International College of Nursing (JRCKICN), Japan, on Friday (17/07/2026). This activity is part of the Student Outbound program aimed at broadening students’ academic experience and skills in nursing and disaster management.

The session began with a presentation on Basic Life Support (BLS) and an introduction to the practical skills laboratory by JRCKICN lecturers from 07:00 to 08:00. Afterwards, students engaged in two hours of BLS simulation exercises, which included hands-on practice with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) as part of emergency first response.

Following the simulation session, activities continued with a district survey around the JRCKICN area from 11:00 to 14:00. During this survey, students observed areas with potential disaster risks using a Hazard Map. This hands-on survey allowed students to evaluate environmental conditions and understand community-level approaches to potential disaster management.

This series of activities aims to enhance students’ knowledge and skills in emergency response while strengthening their understanding of environment- and community-based disaster preparedness. Furthermore, the program supports SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being by enhancing emergency response capacity, and SDG 4: Quality Education through international learning experiences and direct practical training.

Through this initiative, students are expected to gain both academic and practical insights that support the development of their nursing competencies, particularly in handling emergency and disaster situations. The Student Outbound program also forms part of ongoing efforts to broaden students’ global perspectives and strengthen international collaboration between the Faculty of Nursing Unair and JRCKICN.
