NERS NEWS — Students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, Cohort 2024, Class A3, Group 3, organized the “PELITA” (Hyperglycemia Prevention Through a Comprehensive Education Program) activity on Sunday (June 7, 2026) at the Kejawan Community Hall, RT 002/RW 004, Gebang Putih Village, Sukolilo District, Surabaya. This activity was attended by PKK mothers as an effort to increase public knowledge and awareness regarding the prevention of hyperglycemia through comprehensive health education.
The activity was carried out through seminars and health education sessions delivered by students under the supervision of facilitator lecturers with expertise in Adult Client Nursing, Community Nursing, and Nursing Information Systems. The materials provided included the definition of hyperglycemia, risk factors, signs and symptoms, possible complications, as well as preventive measures through the implementation of a healthy lifestyle. Participants appeared enthusiastic during the educational sessions and actively engaged in discussions regarding health issues commonly encountered within their families.
In addition to the educational activities, participants also received free health screening services as a form of early detection of risk factors for non-communicable diseases. These health screenings aimed to help community members understand their health conditions so that they could undertake more optimal prevention and control efforts. This activity served as a means for the community to obtain health information while also increasing awareness of the importance of maintaining blood glucose levels within the normal range. The PELITA Program aims to improve public health literacy, particularly regarding the prevention of hyperglycemia and diabetes mellitus, while encouraging families to play an active role in implementing healthy lifestyle behaviors. This activity aligns with the efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), which focuses on improving public health and well-being, and SDG 4 (Quality Education) through the dissemination of quality health education to the community.
Through this activity, students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, hope to make a tangible contribution to increasing public awareness and capacity in preventing hyperglycemia from an early stage. It is hoped that the knowledge gained by participants can be applied in daily life and disseminated to family members and the surrounding community, thereby creating a healthier and more productive environment.
