Unair Professional Nursing Students Conduct PKRS “Prevent Postoperative Infections” at IRNA 3 RSUA

NERS NEWS – Professional Nursing Practice students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, Cohort B27 Group 17 successfully conducted a Hospital Health Promotion Program (PKRS) on Friday (20/02/2025) at IRNA 3, Rumah Sakit Universitas Airlangga. In this activity, the group raised the theme “Preventing Postoperative Infections.”

During the session, the students delivered educational material covering the definition of infection and surgical site infection, signs and symptoms that need to be recognized, as well as factors influencing the occurrence of infection. The main focus of the education was infection prevention strategies, both during hospitalization and after patients return home.

Postoperative infection is an infection that occurs at the surgical wound site after a surgical procedure. This condition generally develops within 30 days after surgery, commonly between the 5th and 10th day. Infection may involve the skin (superficial), deeper tissues, or even organs.

It is important for patients and families to recognize early signs of infection, including:

  • Pain (Dolor)
  • Warmth at the wound site (Calor)
  • Swelling (Tumor)
  • Redness (Rubor)
  • Loss of function (Functio laesa)
  • Presence of pus at the wound site

To prevent infection and support optimal healing, patients and families are encouraged to perform proper self-care at home by following these steps:

  • Follow all medical instructions for wound care.
  • Perform handwashing using the 6-step technique recommended by WHO.
  • Take antibiotics as prescribed and complete the full course.
  • Ensure family members wash their hands before having contact with the patient.
  • Attend follow-up appointments as scheduled.

The PKRS activity was conducted from 10:00 AM until completion, using lecture and interactive discussion methods. Educational media such as posters and leaflets were utilized to enhance participants’ understanding. The activity was supervised by Ners Nandya throughout its implementation.

After the presentation, the session continued with a question-and-answer segment. Several participants actively asked questions related to the material presented. This created an engaging atmosphere and demonstrated that the PKRS activity was carried out successfully and smoothly.

Through this PKRS program, it is hoped that patients and families will better understand the importance of preventing postoperative infections, be able to independently apply appropriate wound care practices, and actively participate in supporting the healing process to minimize the risk of complications.
