NERS NEWS – Professional Nursing students from the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (Unair), conducted a Hospital Health Education (PKRS) program titled “Understanding Pneumonia, Protecting Loved Ones” at the IRNA 6 ward of Universitas Airlangga Hospital (RSUA). This activity was designed for patients’ families to enhance their understanding of pneumonia (lung inflammation), covering its definition, signs and symptoms, modes of transmission, and home-based prevention.

The PKRS program was carried out through direct counseling using an educational and interactive approach. The material focused on identifying pneumonia as a major respiratory tract infection, recognizing symptoms such as coughing, fever, and shortness of breath, and understanding how it spreads. Additionally, participants were educated on preventive measures at home, including the importance of hand hygiene and proper cough etiquette. The session also featured simple demonstrations to ensure practical understanding.

The session was attended by nine family members of patients currently receiving care in IRNA 6. The activity took place on April 16, 2026, at 10:00 AM WIB and proceeded in an orderly manner. The program was supervised by the clinical instructor of IRNA 6, Sri Purwanti, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep. Throughout the event, participants showed great enthusiasm, listening attentively and actively participating in the Q&A session.

The primary goal of this initiative was to increase the knowledge and awareness of family members regarding pneumonia, enabling them to recognize symptoms early and implement appropriate preventive measures at home. This education is expected to help reduce the risk of transmission and prevent complications that could worsen a patient’s condition. This PKRS activity also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by improving public health literacy.

Through this activity, it is hoped that family members will be able to implement clean and healthy living behaviors in their daily lives, particularly regarding hand hygiene and cough etiquette, to protect themselves and their families from the risks of pneumonia.
