WISE 2026: Universitas Airlangga Nursing Students Conduct UTI Prevention Education for the Kalijudan Community in Surabaya

NERS NEWS — Students of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga (Unair), organized a health education program titled “WISE (Creating Awareness and Self-Hygiene for UTI Prevention)” at RW 06 Hall, Jl. Kalijudan No. 245, Mulyorejo District, Surabaya, on Friday, June 12, 2026. This activity was part of the integrated Project Based Learning (PjBL) for the Adult Nursing, Nursing Information Systems, and Community Nursing courses. The program aimed to improve public knowledge and awareness regarding the importance of maintaining urinary tract health through self-hygiene education and healthy lifestyle behaviors as a practical effort to prevent Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs).

The WISE program was conducted as an interactive health education session consisting of various educational activities. Participants received materials covering the definition and epidemiology of UTIs, risk factors, signs and symptoms, the importance of adequate hydration and balanced nutrition, as well as proper self-hygiene techniques for maintaining genital health. In addition, the activity included a demonstration of simple urine examination as an educational tool for early detection of urinary tract disorders, as well as proper urination practices and hygiene techniques after urination. The event was systematically arranged, beginning with the opening session, welcoming remarks, pre-test, presentation of materials, demonstrations, question-and-answer discussions, post-test, participant awards, closing session, and group documentation.

This activity involved 18 students from Group 1, Class A1, Batch 2024, Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, who served as the organizing committee. The program took place on Friday, June 12, 2026, from 08:00 to 10:15 AM at RW 06 Hall, Kalijudan, Mulyorejo District, Surabaya, with mothers in the local community as the target participants. The activity was supervised by three academic advisors: Dr. Abu Bakar, M.Kep., Ns., Sp.Kep.MB.; Dr. Joni Haryanto, S.Kp., M.Si.; and Nauvila Fitrotul Aini, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep.

This program was initiated in response to the high prevalence of UTIs in the community, largely due to limited knowledge about prevention, low awareness of adequate hydration, the habit of delaying urination, and the circulation of various myths regarding urinary tract health. Through the WISE program, students hoped that the community would be able to perform early detection and adopt proper self-hygiene practices, maintain adequate hydration, and implement balanced nutrition. The students also provided digital educational media in the form of QR codes, allowing community members to access additional information about UTIs.

“I sincerely hope today’s activity brings benefits to all of us, and I apologize for any shortcomings during its implementation,” said Izdihar, the Chairperson of the WISE program. Throughout the event, from the opening session to material presentations, demonstrations, discussions, and documentation, participants showed enthusiasm and actively engaged in the activities until the end.

The WISE program is closely related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through promotive and preventive efforts to reduce UTI incidence and improve community health, this activity contributes to SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being). By integrating Project Based Learning with real community engagement and utilizing QR code-based digital educational media, the program also supports SDG 4 (Quality Education). Furthermore, the collaboration between Faculty of Nursing students at Universitas Airlangga and the RW 06 Kalijudan community as program partners reflects support for SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
