NERS NEWS — Increasing family knowledge about Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) is an important effort to recognize and prevent congenital heart conditions. Based on this need, Young Nurses of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga B27 organized a Hospital Health Promotion (PKRS) activity titled “Peluk Jantung Si Kecil” (Pahami, Edukasi, dan Lindungi Jantung Si Kecil). The educational activity was held on Thursday, July 30, 2026, in the CVCU PPJT Waiting Room at RSUD Dr. Soetomo. The activity used lectures, leaflets, posters, and interactive discussions to improve families’ understanding of Congenital Heart Disease, warning signs and symptoms, risk factors and causes, preventive measures, and the important role of families in recognizing and preventing congenital heart disease.
The “Peluk Jantung Si Kecil” PKRS was conducted by Young Nurses from Group 4, Wave 1 of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga, as an implementation of nurses’ promotive and preventive roles in the hospital setting. The educational materials covered the definition of Congenital Heart Disease (CHD), causes and risk factors, signs and symptoms that should be recognized early, the importance of appropriate examinations and treatment, and measures to prevent complications. Families were also educated about the importance of meeting children’s nutritional needs, adhering to prescribed treatment, attending routine follow-up appointments as scheduled, and recognizing warning signs requiring immediate medical attention.
The PKRS activity held in the CVCU PPJT Waiting Room at RSUD Dr. Soetomo received a positive response and was attended enthusiastically by patients’ families. Participants actively followed the presentation, engaged in discussions, and asked various questions about Congenital Heart Disease and caring for children at home. The activity was directly supervised by the Head of the CVCU PPJT Unit at RSDS, Ms. Sulistiani, S.ST.
Families play a very important role as the primary caregivers for children with Congenital Heart Disease, both during hospitalization and after returning home. Family knowledge of the condition, adherence to therapy, fulfillment of nutritional needs, and ability to recognize warning signs are factors that can influence treatment outcomes and children’s quality of life. Through this structured education, families are expected to gain a better understanding and become capable of providing optimal support and care while actively preventing complications.
This clinical education activity substantially supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
- SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being): Supporting children’s health through education on Congenital Heart Disease, early detection, and the role of families in prevention and early recognition to improve quality of life.
- SDG 4 (Quality Education): Providing easy-to-understand health education to patients’ families as a foundation for caring for children with Congenital Heart Disease, while also serving as a clinical learning opportunity for Nursing Profession students.
Through the “Peluk Jantung Si Kecil” PKRS program, it is hoped that family knowledge and awareness of Congenital Heart Disease will continue to increase, enabling families to actively support treatment outcomes and children’s recovery. Young Nurses from Group 4, Wave 1 of the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Airlangga are committed to continuing to provide beneficial health education for patients and families in cardiac care settings. Synergy among healthcare professionals, educational institutions, and patients’ families is expected to foster patient-centered care and improve the quality of life of children with Congenital Heart Disease.
